Replace PRAM battery with Button Cell CMOS battery?

I've got my socket SE/30 apart and just finished putting new caps on the board. I need a new battery anyhow since the one on the board says 1988 on it.

I got to thinking about it and wondered if there would be any issues replacing the holder for the PRAM battery with a holder for a button cell CMOS battery since they don't explode/leak. CR2032 CMOS batteries are 3v and the PRAM batteries are 3.6v, so I don't know if it would even work. There's a button cell LiOn 3.6v battery that could fit the bill though. It's code is LIR2032.

Any thoughts?

they talk about pram batteries here:

i have seen coin cell and button cell leak,

no point in worrying, life its self is just a lease.

my suggestion is when you notice your time off, take your machine apart.

change the battery or pull the battery.

if you know you are going to be storing your mac for a extended period of time,

pull the batteries

I think in some cases of exploding pram batteries, you will find they had spent some time in cold storage, and got very cold.

Yeah I've got them before. It's just that I can never remember seeing a button cell battery leaking or anything. A quick google search shows that you're right; they do indeed leak. I already have the two mounts switched so I think I'll give it a shot and see how she works.

The batteries that have leaked have been very old, >10 years. 3V is already borderline, and given the much lower capacity of these cells, I doubt one would last long. Original type 1/2AA lithium cells are readily available, Ebay and Jameco have them among other places. Not many reasons to use something else.

Don't use 3V. You need 3.6V for it to work. How you make that up is up to you.
