Problems upgrading PDQ PB to OSX w/ XPF

I'm trying to get OSX installed onto the upgraded PDQ PowerBook that I bought a while back (G4/500 with 512MB RAM) and I'm having problems getting it to work. Ideally, I would like to have Tiger running on it, and I know that requires using XPostFacto, but it's just not working. The PB is already set up with two partitions: 7MB to install X onto, and about 13MB for OS 9.1 (which is the boot volume currently). XPF 4.0 will not allow me to select any of the drives to boot, either in OSX or OS9. They all show up with screwed-up icons and the "! in a yellow triangle" icon, which tells me to check the log file. The log file reads:

MountedVolume::MountedVolume error: -8738: of a program error
MountedVolume::MountedVolume error: -8738: of a program error
MountedVolume::MountedVolume error: -8738: of a program error
MountedVolume error? It doesn't like something with the hard drive maybe? Having 3 drives and 3 identical error messages seems significant... but I have no idea what it means.

Next, I tried installing 10.2 using the CDs from my dead Dual USB iBook G3. It seemed to want to start from the CD... it got to the grey screen with the grey Apple on it before the screen got all weird and the PB freezes. It stayed at the grey logo screen, but parts of the screen got several sections of vertical lines going horizontally across the screen (to me, they looked a lot like zebra stripes).

So then I tried using that CD with XPF, and got the same result as the Tiger CD above. None of the 3 possible volumes were listed as bootable in either OSX or OS9.

I know I formatted both partitions as HFS+ using Drive Setup before I installed OS9.1. Also, the OSX partition is the first partition, and is only 7MB in size. As far as I know, everything is set up correctly, and it should work, but it doesn't for some reason.

My gut is telling me that it has something to do with the G4 upgrade... but I was unable to find any sort of useful information regarding this particular problem. I don't even know which specific upgrade it is (aside from it being a G4/500mhz), so I have no idea what to even look for. Plus, since I don't have the PB's original processor, I can't even swap out the processor upgrade to test if it's really the culprit in this case.

Is there something special I need to do because of the G4 upgrade before I try to install OSX, either with XPF for 10.4 or without it for 10.2? Is there an easy way to know which type/brand of upgrade it is without embarking on a full tear-down of the PB? If I knew the specifics for the G4 upgrage, then maybe I'd have better luck searching for a solution to my problem.

Did you try getting a hold of the XPF people to find out what a -8738 error is precisely?
