Just got rid of one ,300 mhz...and still have one more..the 225 model..My question is..Does anyone in the forum, surf with 'em ? How do you like the 6500 overall ? UPGRADES ? and how does the 6500 compare to it's older brother, Performa 6400...

Yuppers, I surf with mine. When my G4 pooped out a few months back, I used it as my main machine for a month or so; works like a champ. Max out the RAM, pop 8.6 or 9.1 on there, and surf away with WamCom 1.3.1.

How do you like the 6500 overall ?
I love mine; great machine. Still relatively modern enough to get some things done in today's world, but still old enough to work with all the good old stuff. I'm using mine as a webserver right now :)

UPGRADES ?
Max out the RAM (128 megs)

G3 upgrade card

USB

FireWire

Anything else your heart desires.

How does the 6500 compare to it's older brother, Performa 6400?
They're basically the same machine, except that the 6500 went to higher speeds. The 6400 had 8 megs soldered to the lobo that the 6500 does not have.

Since MultiFinder17 answered most of the questions, I'll just do the pros/cons over the 6400.

Pros:

Higher processor clocks

50MHz system bus (compared to 40MHz on the 6400)

Improved performance in disk and other I/O operations (newer system controllers)

Integrated ATI RAGE (I think it's a IIc) video controller with 2MB of SGRAM (compared to the old Apple custom chip in the 6400)

Cons:

None, unless you'll really miss that extra 8MB of RAM that isn't soldered to the motherboard anymore.

Plus, the Gazelle models can't run OS X. But then, no 603-based Mac other than the 3400/2400 can run OS X.

cons : hell to get open and do any upgrades if you plan to upgrade get everything you want to upgrade and do it now in one go you dont want to go back in there again

reminds me of that emac

I was wondering about the 6500...I have a 225 mhz running 7.6.1

the ram I believe is 60 ns edo dimms...

My 9500, is ready to be pulled from service, and Either fixed and upgraded

or I'm considering tweaking my 6500 and replacing the 9500 with it.

The 9500 has similar dimms ram...either 60 or 70 dimms..

does anyone know if some of the ram from the 9500, can be transferred to the 6500 ? you know, maxing it out..

How hard is it to put ram into it..and swapping the HD from the 9500

over to it..etc

any advice etc...as always, most welcomed !!!

6500 and 6400 are stuck at 2x64MB DIMMs for 128MB (or 136 on the 6400 because it has 8MB onboard).

9500's can use full 128MB DIMMs for 1.5GB total (12 slots like the 9600).

shame that the 6500 series was capped at a measley 128mb...

Consumer and Pro models are different, the 9x00 were built to be upgraded and cost quite a bit more then the 6x00 models meant for home use. Heck I would think the 6x00 models were intentionally crippled (less expansion slots for card, drives, and ram) just so they would not cut into sales of the Pro models.
