Performa 6200 dead - what can I do?

Hi!

I am pretty new to those classic Macs. In the 90’s I’ve only dealt with x86-models.

So I just got this Performa 6200. The hard drive has been removed. Before powering it on, I had a look at the mainbord. The battery hasn’t leaked but is empty so I removed it. Mainboard itself looks good to me.

When trying to start the Mac (no hard disk, no battery, no monitor attached), I can only hear a very short “plop” out of the speaker and that’s it. I assume it’s the beginning of the startup chime but the boot is interrupted immediately. This happens when trying via the standby power button on the back and when using the power button on the keyboard.

I tried booting with only one RAM module (in the lower bank as seen on the picture) with no success. When pushing the power button without the mainbord inserted, there is no “plopping sound” so I believe it’s inserted correctly.

I fear it’s the mainboard or the power supply. But I hope, there might be something else I could try.

Does anybody have an idea?

Thank you!

First of all, remove that battery. It’s velcroed on but removable

The logicboard will probably benefit from a recap

The power supply is however the most likely culprit - they are cheap units and usually need recapping. They are a little bit of a pain to get to, requires disassembly of most of the machine to get to it.

thank you for your answer. The battery was the first thing to go. I believe a professional recap of the logicboard and an overhaul of the PSU is the way to go. To bad, I hoped there was an easier (and cheaper way for it)

So I found somebody who did a recap of the PSU which made the system boot again. I had recapped the logicboard as well, but the reason for the problem was the PSU which is now working again...

No I got a problem with an G3 imac in my collection but I will adress this in the proper forum.
