Performa 575 motherboard in a Color Classic?

Is the Macintosh Performa 575 motherboard the same as the Macintosh LC 575? Will this motherboard work in my Macintosh Color Classic?

Yes, in fact the LC 575 computer is basically completely identical to the Performa 575 - the only difference being that from memory, the Performa variant was sold in different stores with a different software bundle. Internally, both machines are identical, and as such, as are the motherboards. Here is the section of the Colour Classic FAQ that deals with Mystic upgrades.

One more question where can I download Enabler 065 v.1. I can't seem to find a working download link anywhere.

I plan to install Mac OS 7.6.1 on this system.

Thanks for the links, that site is excellent!

I'm still waiting to receive the 575 motherboard. I been just getting my Color Classic all ready for the install.

Now I should have everything ready for when it comes. I'll post updates once everything is completed.

Thanks again! :)

I can't get this machine to install the Mac OS with the 575 motherboard.

The original motherboard that came with the Color Classic is missing ram and gives me out of memory messages when I try to Install 7.6.1 off the CD.

I also keep getting bus errors when I boot off the Mac OS 7.6.1 Full Install CD and the Mac OS 8.1 CD with the 575 Mother board.

I've tried making my boot disks with the system enabler on it with no success. Also the Floppy drive in the Color Classic is broken.

The Hard Drive has been zeroed out and has nothing on it. It only has 80mb of storage.

I'm in the process of hunting down a 2gb harddrive and an external floppy drive for the Color Classic. I bought an external USB floppy drive for my Aluminum iMac to help me out. I've been trying to make the boot disks on my Snow iMac G3 600mhz.

Please help!

Update: Put barebones System Folder I extracted from 7.6.1 CD-ROM which I then put on a boot disk CD-ROM, booted from disk, copied System Folder to HardDisk with the System Enabler with the stock Motherboard in the computer. Shut computer down booted with Mac OS 7.6.1 CD-ROM with stock motherboard still in the computer, launch installer out of memory dialog comes up, uncheck all the extras, still get out of memory. Boot off Mac OS 8.1 CD with stock motherboard and system folder with and without enabler on the harddrive. Mac OS 8 CD says, not compatible with this Macintosh.

Shut computer down again with the system folder and system enabler from the bootdisk installed on the hard drive. Took stock motherboard out, put LC 575 motherboard in, computer boots with bus error. Put Mac OS 7.6.1 CD ROM in with 575 motherboard still get bus error, Mac OS 8.1(Full) same thing, bus error.

Only success I had was making a 7.6.1 boot disk and booting from it and putting the barebones system folder on the hard drive with the stock motherboard. Nothing else is working.

I don't know what else to do. I was using System Enabler 1.0.

I think I'm going to give System Enabler 1.1 a shot and replace the 1.0 enabler with that on the hard drive. Then boot off the 7.6.1 CD with the 575 board installed.

I'll give you all an update.

Added System Enabler 403 to the System Folder, still nothing when trying to boot off the 7.6.1 CD with 575 board. Got Sad mac face at boot, when I tried to boot off the 8.1 CD .

Tried doing the VGA hack to the 7.6.1 suitcase. but the numbers don't seem to match with the ones given in these instructions....

I'm really starting to not like this computer, it seems like a money pit. All this and nothing seems to be working.

You have done one of the following, I trust:

1. Video hack to allow CC video operation in 640x480, which the replacement logic board demands (which I do not recommend as it effectively destroys a CC); or:

2. ResEdit hack to allow the 575 board to boot in the CC's native 512x whatever resolution (which I do recommend, as you then have a ready way to get back to your stock CC)?

A 575 board in a CC won't work without one or the other. If you need info, google it as the procedures are available "out there."

I personally think a 550 board a far better match for the CC than a 575, the latter machine being better preserved than butchered for yet another CC "upgrade," as it is a gem in itself. A 550, on the other hand, is far more dispensable by comparison.

Unlike the 575 logic board, a 550 logic board in a CC works without hacks, it is generally cheaper to source, it turns your CC into an über-rare CCII (incl. in how the system reports itself), your newly-minted CCII will boot from standard HD utility disks (which a "Mystic" simply will not without yet more work — which I think is undocumented), it will then be the fastest of the genuine Compacts as it makes the machine more than twice as fast as an SE30, it will take up to 128MB of RAM, it will take a maths co-processor (68882), and all of this is just plain meant for any lowly CC, which in its stock configuration is, sadly, basically unusable. Plus, the 575 board will strain the CC's power supply.

I have had both and much prefer the 550/CCII configuration.

I'm fairly sure the guts of the 575 and 550 (apart from the logic board of course) are pretty much identical. The displays are the same (which is the most important factor), so it should be fine.

Both the 575 and 550 take the exact same RAM upgrades - one 72 pin SIMM. They both use the same LC PDS cards as well.

This is very good news because I just bought a 128mb 72pin simm module. I bought an entire LC 550 machine today, so I can pull the board out of that when I receive it, put that into the Color Classic. Then put the LC 575 board in the 550's case and get rid of that damn color classic board lol :p

and get rid of that damn color classic board lol :p
Just my opinion, but I reckon it would be a good idea to keep the original board in case you ever decide to sell the CC, or as a backup in case the 550 board fails for any reason.

Funny thing... I found this thread while googling Color Classics and as I started reading in my head I kept saying "Just make it a CC II!"...

Then about halfway through, it was suggested and I was like "Thank you!"

I'm glad you went that route. IMO, it is THE upgrade for the CC. I, as well, upgraded mine with an LC 550 logic board and added a 33mhz 68882 FPU to complete the effect.

Mine's at 36 MB (4 + 32), which I thought was the max for the LC 550/CCII... Is this not the case? Can I really bring this machine up to 128 MB? :?:

If so, I'm going to be one happy camper. :rambo:
