I received my order of 16v 33uF axial caps from Mouser yesterday, and so tonight I decided to try my hand at soldering and replace the cap closest to the battery holder. I bought enough caps to do all of them, but I wanted to start slow and really ease into it. I have not soldered much in my lifetime and I don't want to ruin a nearly perfectly functional SE logic board.

Actually, I did really well! I was able to get the old corroded one out without damaging the pads or anything near them, I cleaned up the pads with a wick, and then installed the new cap in the correct orientation. It all looks very good to me.

One thing that had been bugging me is how loose the speaker wire plug fits onto the socket. It just about falls back off when placing the logic board. back in the machine. So I popped the pins loose and removed the plug and found out that the Maxell Bomb had corroded the pins inside this plug to the point that they came out in pieces. I stripped a bit of each wire and taped them each to the pins with electrical tape and put it all back together and...

I HAVE SOUND!!!

A friend of mine has a new plug and a crimp tool for that same socket type (he uses it for some non-compact Mac related hobby) and said he will loan it to me tomorrow. So I will get the correct pins and plug put on the wires tomorrow and I really should be good to go. Once I finalize the sound fix by installing the new plug, everything that I know of on this SE will be working correctly! It has been fully resurrected from the Maxell Bomb! ;)

Here is a bonus shot of King's Quest I title screen with glorious theme song majestically playing away...

Congratulations! Hopefully it works for years to come.

Anyways, the SE/30 is especially difficult to repair after maxell explosions, because the battery literally sits right on top of the data bus to the RAM and ROM. YIKES.

Great job! I's always very satisfying to get something like that working again!

Anyway, did you get some sort of hard drive/SCSI2SD yet? If not, I have a few v. 3 SCSI2SDs that I need to sell off. You can send me a PM if you're interested!

Of course, if you already have one (I vaguely recall recently reading here that someone got an AztekMonster or whatever it's called. Was that you?), then never mind :)
