Networking 540c and Power Mac 6500

I have some rather large files (mostly music) that I would like to get from my 6500 to my 540c. I can use Localtalk, but it's slooooooooooooooooooow. Since both of these machines have ethernet, is there any way to get them to talk to each other via that?

BTW, the 6500 is running 9.1 and the 540c is running 7.6.1.

Thanks!

For the PB, you need an AAUI/RJ-45 adapter. For the 6500, a Comm. Slot II NIC. The CSII slot may already have a modem card in it. Alternatively, you could use a PCI NIC. You'll need a Cat 5e crossover ethernet cable between the RJ-45 port of the adapter on the PB and the RJ-45 port of the NIC in the 6500. Join the Macs before you start them up to avoid possible failure to recognize their ethernet connection. The adapter and the NIC should each show a lighted LED when the Macs reach their desktops. Both Macs will be limited to 10Base-T ethernet speeds, but you may wish, later on, to have more Macs communicating in a LAN over TCP/IP. For peer-to-peer connection, just AppleTalk will do.

Set up your LAN-of-two with the 6500 as file 'server' (the source) and the PB as 'client' (the destination). In both, activate Ethernet in the pop-up menu from Apple::Control Panels::AppleTalk. Enable filesharing on the 6500 from Apple::Control Panels::Sharing, and on the 540 from File::Sharing. Give each Mac a name, enter your Owner name and the same password in each setup pane. AppleTalk alone will enable the Macs to communicate in either direction, but you may as well enable communication (checkbox) over TCP/IP while you are in the Sharing setup window. Set up the hard drive containing the files to transfer from the 6500 by highlighting it, using command-i (Get Info.), and selecting Filesharing from the dropdown menu. Click the checkbox to share the contents of the drive from the 6500 to the 540. Set the sharing privileges if you wish.

In the 540, open Apple::Chooser, and double-click on AppleShare in the left pane. Even if you use only AppleTalk, the name of the 6500 should appear in the right pane. (Similarly, if you open Chooser on the 6500, the name of the 540 will appear.) Double-click on the name and enter the required data in the following windows. When the icon of the 6500's drive mounts on the 540's desktop you can open it and navigate to the wanted files, and then drag-copy them to the icon of the 540's drive. When you wish to stop transferring, highlight the 6500's drivr icon and 'eject' the drive with command-y.

There are plenty of steps, but the process is built into both OSs, and should give you no problems.
