Mac IIsi SCSI CD boot issues

My Mac IIsi is having some issues both booting from a SCSI device, and seeing any other SCSI device.

The IIsi has a new scsi2sd adapter with a 7.5.3 image from http://www.savagetaylor.com/2018/01/05/setting-up-your-vintage-classic-68k-macintosh-using-a-scsi2sd-adapter/ . The scsi2sd can't see either the SCSI CD ROM drive, or an external SCSI HDD.

I can boot from an external SCSI CD ROM drive, but then can't  see the scsi2sd. 

The external drive is set to id 3 and is set to terminate, and the  scsi2sd is 0.

I've tried:

• booting 7.6.1 CD (no joy at all)
  
• booting  7.5.3  CD (works as above)
  
• booting CD drive pulled from enclosure and connected directly to IIsi
  
• same, with internal HDD shoved into  enclosure (saw CD but no HDD)
  
• booted from floppy (saw neither internal HDD, external CD, external HDD)
  

Any ideas?

Is it an apple cd drive or other brand?  If it boots from cd but the drive doesn't show up when you boot from other device I would say it needs software.  Have you tried using CD-ROM toolkit or cd sunrise something like that in your working install?

actually just reread your post and few more questions.  What is the enclosure you are using since more than one drive is having issues with it.  Are you setting id with some sort of switch or actually setting on drive? Is there an actual terminator on the enclosure?

Are you sure that on 7.5.3 you have CD-ROM extension? I suggest you to download Transoft SCSI Director from Macintosh Garden to see if the IIsi sees the external drives, maybe you need to mount them manually.

I don't recall if on the older Macs the Mac itself used SCSI ID 0 for the controller.  What ID is your external HDD using, perhaps trying an ID other than 0 for the SCSI2SD would work.  Also, make sure you have the correct number of terminators enabled, too many will definitely cause problems.

Nope, controller's ID is 7

Update:

I discovered and used this amazing Apple Legacy Software Recovery CD https://www.macintoshrepository.org/931-apple-legacy-software-recovery-cd . 

If you're working on a 68k Mac, full stop! Get this iso now! 

I was able to boot from this CD. When I used Drive Setup, I noticed the scsi2sd's light blipped for a second.

Per this thread, 



I updated the scsi2sd's config to identify itself as a "    SEAGATE" drive and so forth. 

This time, the scsi2sd 'drive' showed up. I tried initializing with 1.5, but that didn't work. 1.7.3 did, though, and I was able to split my 16gb SD card into  4  4gb volumes.

I'm in the  process of copying some files off the old internal HDD. I've booted from the Recovery CD, and am copying to blank "drive" on my Floppy Emu SD card.
