Installing ProDOS to hard drive - Apple IIe

I have an Apple IIe with the following setup:

1Mhz 6502 CPU

64KB RAM

Slot 5:

Apple SCSI Card

Slot 6:

Apple Disk Controller Card

Slot 5's SCSI card is hooked up to an IBM 1080MB SCSI HDD (Apple picks it up, can read/write from it only 32MB in)

and the Disk Controller Card has two 5.25" floppy drives (Beige Floppy drives) in series

I am trying to install ProDOS (or Dos 3.3(?) ) onto the hard drive and make it bootable. Am I barking up the wrong tree, or is this do-able, and how would I go about doing it?

Would prefer help ASAP as I would love to play with this.

I already have ADT Pro on a floppy, have transfered several disk images to disks, now I want to boot from the HDD.

Please for the love of god help me do this!

I've always used CopyII+ for formatting drives, but mine are all IDE, so I'm not sure if you need to do anything special for SCSI. Once you've got it formatted just copy over PRODOS and BASIC.SYSTEM and you're good to go.

Bear in mind that the Apple II scans the slots from highest to lowest at startup, so if you want it to automatically boot from the HDD you'll need to put it in slot 7.

Once your hard drive is partitioned - a nice 32MB ProDOS partition should do you fine - ADTPro can format it. Then just copy the files as previously mentioned.

DOS 3.3 can't do much with the drive, so just stick to ProDOS.

Yeah, I remember that. My dad used to be a heavy Apple II user back in the day. I also studied the schematics and stuff.

Thanks, I read that and tried it. Maybe my mistake was putting the SCSI card in slot 6 instead of 7. So I will try 7.

Unfortunately it might be a while. I injured myself at work on my bad leg. I am pretty out of it as I had to take 3 Oxycodone tablets (Oxycontin) and am quite out of it. I also am missing work and it's only my 3rd week on the job. I CANNOT lose this job, and I seem to be cursed as most jobs I get I lose because I get sick or injured and the 3rd week seems to be a common occurance. I am determined to do what it takes, including willing to fudge the numbers so I get unpaid overtime. I want this job bad and I am going to try to do whatever it takes to keep in.

Thanks guys. I was on the right track (format with ADTPro/copy system/Prodos files) but I guess I had it in the wrong slot.

I tried to get a super serial card, but it turned out to be like $32 + 16 shipping, I was not willing to pay that, so I have just been using an audio cassette.

Does anyone have a serial card for the Apple II that they would like to sell, or trade for?

I got lots of mac stuff, including working super drives (1.44MB) and RAM and stuff.

I would love to get this Apple II decked out somewhat.

You should be able to obtain a SSC (Super Serial Card) for $10 or less plus shipping. I got mine for $7 + shipping at DigitalDinos. Try posting on comp.sys.apple2.marketplace.

There are zillions of SSC's out there; they are not some "rare" or expensive thing.

Aww. Heck yeah!

Just got the drive working. Copying programs to it right now, including ADTPro.

Anyone know any good copy-protection programs that can strip copy protection off the disk so I can put them on the drive? I can find a few, but I would love to put Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego on the HDD to play.

Oh sweet jesus the drive is fast!.

So quick it's unbelievable. I will have to find MS works or something. I got a Epson dot-matrix in the car. I will have to get it and install it.

If you want a word processor/spreadsheet/database program to install onto your hard drive then I'd suggest downloading Appleworks from here: ftp://ftp.apple.asimov.net/pub/apple_II/images/productivity/integrated/appleworks/ they have several different versions there but I'd suggest 5.1. That I know of MS never made anything similar to Appleworks for the Apple II.
