IIci with a Radius bonus!

Hey Ya'll.  I've been busy doing stuff for a while.

Anyway, in the course of my recent travels I picked up this IIci and it came with a surprise...

A 33 Mhz Radius Rocket card!  A card that I put in it 20+ years ago and completely forgot about.

So the story on this IIci is it belonged to a buddy of mine in Tacoma, WA who was using it in the late 90's.

During that time I had access to a lot of "old" Mac hardware and apparently I upgraded his IIci with this card back then.

(I remember installing the cache card and a bunch of ram but forgot the rest.)

While I was in Tacoma last week I was visiting my buddy and asked him about that old IIci he had.

He still had it in his closet, since ~2000, when he got an iMac.

So he let me have it and I brought it home and just opened it tonight to check for an exploded Maxell bomb.

And what the heck? A Radius Rocket! And an intact battery!!  Wheee!

And a cache card and some ethernet card.

Unfortunately the on/off reset switch is missing, broken long ago no doubt.

Maybe tomorrow I'll try to fire it up!  :)

If you haven't already, PLEASE get that battery out ASAP!

Anyway, nice find (re-find?)

Very nice! Better find than even the Rocket is that SCSI 2 PDS daughtercard on it. Add a killer VidCard does block transfer with the Rocket and it's a killer system. What did your friend do, software development with compiling done on the Rocket under RocketShare while coding on the IIci?

Ha ha ha, no. He played games.

I doubtless picked up that card, like so much other stuff, when I was volunteering at Goodwill back then.

I was just interested in upgrading his system on the cheap since he couldn't afford a new one.

And yes, the Maxcell battery has been removed and safely disposed of by the bomb squad. :D

LOL! That's about the most simple explanation for using a IIci without a good video card. Coding/compiling is the only reason I can think of offhand for having a Rocket setup under RocketShare without one by then. Haphazard, availability driven upgrade path explains it all. I'm surprised the Rocket didn't mess with sound for gaming?

It may have, I don't remember I doubt he does either. It was 20 years ago.

Yeah, pity I didn't pick up any Nubus video cards back then.

I'm kind of curious about just what's still on the HD, as far as Radius software.

Honestly, once I verify functionality it will probably all go on the block. I have no real interest in a suped-up IIci.

(Please no one PM me about it, I'll post it in the Trading Post area when I'm ready.)

Very nice. A IIci is next on my list. I have one of those Daystar 601 accelerators and my chances are better at getting a nice IIci then the unobtanium IIsi daughter card to run it in my IIsi.

Well it look like this IIci is dead.

I installed a new battery and it does nothing when I try to power it up. (Without any cards installed.)

Not really surprised.

Probably because of the several leaky caps at the back of the board...

I'll mess with it a bit more later but I suspect this system is just parts now, I don't think I want to spend the time recapping it.

It does have 32mb of ram I can scavenge for my other systems.

IIci is a rather popular machine so it may be worth recapping if the system is complete. It's not a hard board to recap.

Don't the IIvi and IIvx also take Daystars without adapters?   Not that anyone really wants a IIvi or IIvx...    I might like a IIvx with a IIci motherboard in it.

Hmm, it might be that power switch on the back is broken... Hmm...

Need to break out the multimeter.

More later if something develops...
