i have an LG external and also internal ( in my QS G4 ) burner that can use those DVD-ROM's

Can i install and run system 8.1 from at DVD-ROM in the G4 or my 8500 ?

The 8500/G3 (Sonnet) has FireWire and USB ports. I have used the LG burner with the 8500/G3 to rip/burn DVDmovies but never thought of running a system on a DVD-ROM.

My understanding of DVD-RAM is that you use it just like you would a floppy disk. Once you insert a disk, the computer should ask you to format it, then you can add files to it, read them, open them, re-save them, etc etc etc, right on the disk.

Unfortunately, a bootable DVD-RAM will probably never exist, and also unfortunately, if they work in system 8/9 at all, you'll likely need to be running system 8.6 or later so that it has all of the correct support files. (as per the wiki page about dvd ram http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD-RAM )

Oh, here we go, Apple wrote about how to use DVD-RAMs and they can say it better than I.

You can start up your G4 from DVD-RAM apparently, but it doesn't say anything about older macs starting up from dvdram drives. it may or may not be possible, but system 8.1 probably won't work, for reading/using the dvd-ram discs, or booting up from them.
