What HD software are you using? You're best off using the copy of Drive Setup that comes with OS 8.1 on a 6300.

Some hard drives don't like to work if they're by themselves. Check the jumper settings and see if there is one called Single. Quantum may have a Master/Single setting.

Western Digital hard drives occasionally have problems when used by themselves with the jumpers configured incorrectly. In fact, I think that one or two people in other posts may have improperly-set WD drives.

These drives (at least the ones made up until 2002 or so) have four settings: Single, Master, Slave, Cable Select. If the drive is by itself with Master jumpered, the drive will look for a slave drive until it finds one, or (if there isn't one present) the system will hang for a noticeable amount of time until the drive times out and begins accepting commands from the host. The Single setting (no jumpers on the block) is your best bet when installing these drives by themselves. In this configuration, the drive knows it's the master and there are no other drives on the bus to look for, thus it comes online immediately and the computer will boot noticeably faster.

Newer drives may not have this issue, but it never hurts to take the jumper off just to be safe.

As far as software goes, LCGuy got it with OS 8's Drive Setup program, which typically detects and formats any hard drive regardless of whether or not it's an Apple original drive. LaCie's SilverLining should work with IDE (at least the newer versions), so give that a go if you can find it.

i try use drive setup thart comes with OS 8.1 an comes with OS 9.0.4 and nothing....

i think this hard drive(Quantum) is incompatible with Performa 6300CD...today i conected a seagate with 40GB 8-o running OS 9.0.4 and work'd fine :-/ ......

I go to give up this Hard drive quantum [:(!] !]'>
