getting a color crt and color classic guts into a Classic

Id like to know if it is possible to get the 10 inch color crt from the color classic into the Classic's case designed for a 9 inch crt. If it's not possible where can I get a 9 inch color crt that would work. I don't want to use an LCD, I like the look of crt better. Also, will the insides of a color classic II fit into a Classic case?

A 10" CRT's neck is too deep to fit into a Classic case.

The insides of a Color Classic also will be a very tough fit - if they will fit at all.

Finally, if you actually have a Color Classic II, that's a pretty rare find - if your CC II currently has a case, even a damaged one, I would recommend keeping it, and perhaps using a regular CC case as a donor to replace the damaged parts of your CC II case - while keeping the CC II name badge of course.

Does nobody search anymore?

See this thread which discusses the subject exhaustively.

The guts of a Color Classic will absolutely NOT fit inside another compact. The dimensions are completely incompatible.

And tmtomh is correct, the Color Classic II is such a rare animal that you would be better off selling it on eBay and taking the enormous profits and buying a regular Color Classic which can be had for much less and are much more widely available throughout the world. The same can also be said for the UK released "Colour Classic". That said, the only real difference between the CC & CCII case is the front badge which can easily be transferred to another case. However, there is the serial number on the back which will not decode properly as a CCII if the badge is switched, nor will the embossed Agency label on the bottom of the case match the front badge.

By the way, should topics like this end up in the "Hacks" section now?

hhmmm....

I guess Ill keep the Color Classic II intact then, but is there any 9" color monitor that would fit into a Classic case and any guts that can run os 8 or 9 as a max that will fit?

Yep, this is a hacks forum thread. That said:

Yes, 10" VGA CRTs are available that will just barely fit into a Classic's case, however . . .

. . . the depth of a Color CRT requires an incredibly fugly addition hanging off of the back!

If you had a Platinum Plus, IIRC, you could google the "BackPack Drive" for a far less fugly, but probably not deep enough rear addition to make a Color CRT work.

As far as decent MoBos for Compact Macs, check out my 6360/6500 powered Classic thread in the hacks forum. AFAIK that's the ONLY way to shoehorn a worthwhile MoBo into any of the Compacts, barring a MacMini or a PowerBook/MacBook kinda deal.

even if I could find a 9" monitor will it still hang off the back?
Yes. How many ways do we have to say it? I even posted a link to a two page thread that goes into explicit detail about why. There is no such thing as a 9" Color CRT which will fit within the dimensions of a pre-Color Classic compact. Period.

And yes there are all kinds of hacks where PowerBooks or G4 Cubes which run OS 8 or 9, can be put into a compact case. Go with a Grayscale CRT and you'll be fine. Otherwise, if you absolutely have to have color without modifying the case, you'll have to go LCD. There are numerous threads in this forum that discuss many such hacks, with some excellent pictures. Browse around some of these old threads and you'll find a lot of good info.

It is best to search and follow the links posted in answer to your questions, before asking more, IMHO. ;)

That said, here at the barracks, the only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked, so let's all chill just a bit!

Haven't found a pic of the "Backpack" HDD enclosure for the Plus yet. In the first place, they're probably unobtanium, and if you did get your hands on one it's be blasphemous to hack it . . . but faking one up that'd be just deep enough might be an option worth looking into.

There are no stupid question, just stupid mistakes made by not asking enough questions!
