G3 B&W for MIDI

Hi Liberators!

I wanted to know your opinion on using an old G3 B&W for my MIDI keyboard (M-Audio ProKeys 49).

I have usb midi interface, which works in OsX.

What software would you suggest for MIDI, but I need instruments too, different pianos, electric keys and so on.

Should I go Os9 or OsX?

I want to play in real time through the G3, and when I like it transfer the midi data to my PC running CUBASE and get on with the song.

What if I wanted to make it a sampler controlled by the G3?

Please help me.

Somewhere in there - possibly in the DOS archive - you will find a program that turns your PC into a sampler and just a sampler. There's also an OS 9 archive.

Personally, I would suggest sticking to OS 9 on the B&W, unless you have a G4 CPU and maxed out RAM; even then, OS 9 is likely to offer better performance. Though OS X is in general more stable, carefully configuring your boot configuration and software can eliminate most crashes under OS 9.

I would also recommend having a look at PureMac's listings, as they describe and link to commercial software as well as shareware. Ditto OldVersion.com.

Finally, creative use of appropriate keywords in the search function on this forum will turn up many relevant previous discussions

OS 9 is likely to have better latency as well, especially if you plan to make the unit a dedicated playback controller. I'd look for OMS and start with that.

There's a commercial app called GigaSampler that does just this, as well. It is supposed to have the best grand piano around, and a very large library of compatible samples out there.

Thank you for reply guys, sorry to bother you with my stupid questions, but Im realy unexperienced with Os9 and MIDI.

To describe what I want to do.

I have a M-Audio Keystudio 49, which is a small MIDI keyboard/controller.http://m-audio.com/products/en_us/KeyStudio.html

Next I have an old Kawai drum machine.

I want to be able to play samples which I create, and of course some piano and electric organ. Live so I can play with my other tracks. When its finished I want to be able to transport the MIDI to Cubase 5 on my PC. Maybe I will have to record an audio track from my B&W and then move it. What about synchronization?

What are good applications?

I downloaded Rebirth Rb-338 which is pretty sweet.

And some good synthesizer which will run on Os9, G3 300Mhz, 512Ram.

Im going to install Os9 only on the B&W, becasue OsX takes up a lot of hard drive and is slow.

Well for MIDI sequencing and/or MIDI combined with audio, you could have a look for Opcode Vision and Studio Vision which were released as free downloads several years back. I'm not sure where you would find them these days though.

Deck II is an excellent multi-track audio program for OS 9 and below, with fairly basic MIDI integration - though there is also a companion MIDI sequencer called Metro that is supposed to run very nicely alongside it.

There's a Digidesign Samplecell PCI on ebay somewhere at the moment, which is a hardware sample player on a card, with Mac OS control and editing software.

Do you own a mixer?

I am googling around for the software you mentioned.

I would mind if it was cracked or so...

For now Im on Cubase 5 on my PC. I own a Alesis Multimix Firewire mixer/multitrack, which is an awesome tool, but since the G3 is slow, I will be using it on a PC. Im just trying to find a use for G3 in my "studio" setup.

that g3 isnt slow if u run the right apps!, the slowest thing about it is the disk speed access

if u stick a pci sata adapter + new hard drive + use the appropriate software

you would be surprised what it can do!

i would suggest running cubase 4 + reason 1.0 + live 1.0 on mac os 8.6 on a powermac g3

this is a very powerful combo of rewire programs which run great on os 8.6

you can also try out running opcode studio vision 4.0!! for more info + download locations visit the site

you can get old discontinued copies of cubase + reason + live + digital performer + pro tools free + lots of plugins

just come on by!

hey there guys

does anyone know of a pci card that i could find available that would add

serial ports to any g3 or g4?

such as the romulus + remus cards.. but i cant find them anywhere

i also found that a yamaha xg card might have this port but i cant find them either

im hoping someone knows of another card that may be cheap + available that would

allow me to add this port for midi/serial compatibility!

perhaps i should just start another thread on this topic
