Flash Drive Test Results: PowerBook 180 with CF PowerMonster

Some success was reported in using a CompactFlash card in combination with a Stratos CF PowerMonster and a PowerBook 180. For an old 32 MB CF card the patched Apple Drive Setup 7.3.5 works well, while several other drivers seemed not to make the drive bootable or even recognised by the PowerBook 180. Nice speed results I got from that tiny CF card, a Jenoptik 32 MB. The CF card reads a lot faster than any 2.5" SCSI HDD I have got, especially the Toshiba MK2526FB (528 MB), which is one of the fastest drives that were manufactured for the PowerBook. The time the PowerBook 180 needs to boot is about 1/3 faster for the CF card compared to the Toshiba HDD (System 7.1/extensions disabled, boots within 20 seconds).

After this experience I aimed for another speed bump, using a Kingston Ultra 100x 1GB CF card with the CF PowerMonster. For some reason Apple Drive Setup 7.3.5 will not work for this combination. The drive is recognised and shows up on the desktop, but copying files onto the CF card leads to read/write access errors. A quick initialisation with HDT 2 from within the PowerBook fixed this issue. The results I have got for the read access are exactly the same as for the Jenoptik 32 MB. However, combined read/write access to the Kingston 1 MB is quite speedy, too, but a good HDD is still faster: duplicating the System folder of 47,5 MB (530 items) is finished after 5'10". Comparison: the Toshiba 528 MB HDD takes only 4'15" to finish the same task.

Any suggestions for a unified benchmark task would be most welcome, preferably in shape of a short step by step instruction written as an intro to the Wiki page Flash Drive Test Results ;-)

It's great to know someone took the plunge and bought a CF PowerMonster, despite the high price. I am very tempted to do the same with my SCSI-based Macs, but probably with an Acard 7220U adapter instead.
