power requirements really arnt a huge ordeal if your running off the SLA, considering most chips these days are extremely low power.

One suggestion: when you do lift the bad IC, replace it with a socket, just in case your first choice of replacement IC doesn't pan out.

Any news on the repair so far?

I havent gotten an LC card with a DP chip yet... As far as a socket, I dont think they make a socket for TQFP ICs. They may but I am not sure.

That SONIC chip is extremely common on Mac Ethernet cards. I think its because its register compatible with whatever Apple used on board their machines so you don't need 3rd party drivers, plus it works with A/UX. On the PC side, I think its register compatible with NE2000 drivers.
