This morning the IIfx was running well :) but 4 hours later when I come to play with it again, bootup problems. I wonder if you guys might have suggestions.

Power up, all's well chime, floppy makes a few noises (but won't boot with disk inserted), the HD starts and gets accessed (busy led flashes), the keyboard leds blink as usual, screen display comes up with a blank grey display (so monitor has synced up), HD stops being accessed (the caps lock light won't come on when the caps lock button pressed) System halts. pah :(

I removed the main board and swapped the 2 surface mt 47uF caps, one didn't seem good (C24), also checked the 12V, 5V and -12V rails all seems spot on. I've removed and wiggled the ROM SIMM in J1, had the 20MB (8 simms) out. The IIfx behaves the same if in our out.

The freeky thing is, I removed the batteries whilst replacing the caps and upon startup I got a strange effect on the screen, same blank synced up display but as I moved the mouse it pulled big chunky blocks across the display. I am also trying to get the SuperMac Spectrum 1152 (and Supervideo 3.1 driver) to do that cycle through the video settings but that seems kaput too, gloom :(

But I could see a proper boot up screen, all my folders were there looked good, just the wrong line rate, so it seemed, I just need to get past that system freeze up.

Anyway after fiddling with the batteries, still fails to boot up. OS7.0

Darn it, all was well just 4 hours ago. Any ideas??

I wonder, I notice a huge custom chip on the video card is getting very hot also two little chips UJ7 and UK7 on the main board are getting hot too. As a thought I removed the video card and the HD flashed for longer (obviously I have nothing to look at) so I'm wondering if the video card has died :(

When I was playing yesterday I was getting "error 1" when opening a large program, which points to a buss error. Also as the "round robin" video options don't appear...

Anyone in the UK got a spare NuBus video card??

Has this machine ever worked with OS 7.0? The reason I ask is because older supermac (and other cards) needed a new BIOS chip to work with OS 7.x when it came out, and that video card you have might be from the OS 6.x era. What ROM version is on the chip?

The videocard worked fine on the IIfx running OS7.0.1 I was in the process of trying to get a new OS set up and internet access. I've had it running a week now, seemed quite good. I found the SuperMac driver V3 and it all was going quite well, I could access all the screen resolutions, nice, then 4 hours later that day.. poof. :(

U6 on the card looks like a EPROM a PLCC in a socket, labelled 3960-1
