I've started collecting together information and resources for PowerPC BeOS...

Woo woo!!

Taking advantage of the BH, I finally got 'round to cleaning up a PM8500 I picked up a few years back, and popped in an Interware (Daystar) dual 604e card I picked up off buyee specifically to play around with BeOS. Thanks to your guide and image(s*) I'm now underway.

I thought I was going to have to remove some RAM, but, as you can see, Be seems to be happy with it!! I did get an error about the network interface not initialising, so will need to figure out how to sort that out. Also (see the '*' above), it took me some head-scratching and poking 'round the "Getting Started" document to figure out how to launch... 🙃 So it might be worth mentioning the "Tools" .hda in your Installing section where you point to the pre-made .hda. 😉 Of course, you can always leave it as is to see who "passes" and who doesn't!! 🤣

All in - happy bunny here! Thanks for giving us an "Easy" button! 👍

Nice setup!
Are you using a pci graphic card or the onboard chip?

Cheers!

Just the onboard - I don't have many PCI graphics cards - mainly NuBus. I do have a Mac Radeon 7000, but not sure Be will support it?
I think I have that card, it works but won't run fullscreen apps iirc.
Best way to test graphic cards support for different modes is Doom.

My 7300 just works, even if it has a G3/500 processor in it. Compatibility seems to be to the board, not the CPU.
My G3 Desktop, B&W and the later stuff seems to be not working for BeOS 5.x I downloaded.
But the onboard video seems to be a bit slow/sluggish, so I am thinking about getting out my QD3D PCI card and put something different in it.

What would you install?

I think I have several PCI cards here....from Mach64/AtiRage/Voodoo Banshee/Voodoo3. I think the VT MP 750 (banshee) would be a good choice, hopefully it is supported by BeOS.

btw. was Rhapsody ever installable on such a early PPC Mac?

Yeah it only works on PCI old world Powermac and clones.

Ati Rage pro should work fine and there's a 3rd party Voodoo3 ppc driver on falconfly.

There's an incompatibility with the 8600 & 9600 for some reason. CPU won't run faster than 100 MHz or something like that. I can't quite remember what the limitation was.

Would be cool if someone could somehow update it and patch it to run G4s and G5s. Haiku just isn't the same. :(
