ATTN: Software Forum Users (mainly those looking for S/W)

LCGuy

LC Doctor/Hot Rodder
The 68kMLA administration has become wary of all the abandonware requests that have been made in this forum lately. We would just like to remind you all that this forum is not just an abandonware request facility, and when posting in this forum, to obey all 68kMLA forum rules, including this one:

Please obey the law…
Any topics that are discussing matters that are legally or morally suspect, and that might get the poster or the forum in trouble will be locked. The last thing we want is a lawsuit against us because someone was discussing how to pirate the latest version of , how to hack the FBI, etc. We relax the rules for software considered "abandonware" (see below), but will still lock or remove topics at the request of the author or publisher. The 68kMLA will never condone software piracy.
Just thought I'd mention something, as we have had a few members signing up who just seem to be here to get software, and this army does not wish to provoke any attacks from stronger forces with much more powerful weapons than ours (that is, the BSA, or any large software companies with lawyers, and lots of them).

Keep in mind, however, that people are still more than welcome to share freeware, shareware, demoware, public domain/open source software, and other software which is legally available for free.

This is LCGuy, signing off. Good day all.

Finally. I mean... making a thread or two asking for help finding something every once in a while is just fine, but making a thousand threads all asking for software is just insane.

Absolutely agree, but to complete the irony shall we make this the thread through which you make requests for finding software?

And lets not forget that 99% of what you are looking for is either freely available for download (negating the need for setting up new torrents - i mean seriously who needs to download dubious quality disk images when the original can be got from apple?) or you can JFGI !!!!

Does Apple host files like the Legacy CD?
We've already had more than one discussion about this, and the answer is 'yes.' Indeed, that is where I downloaded my copy of the CD, from Apple's site.

Especially the user (who shall remain nameless,) who also insist on PMing continuously demanding that I make ISOs of my CDs and post them online somewhere for him. Now, asking would be one thing, but when the entire unsolicited message is "Make the .iso file for System 7.5 CD-ROM and send to me a download link.", it's a bit off-putting.

In his defence I think there is a bit of "lost in translation" going on, I'm pretty sure english is the 2nd language for him

It is. A native English speaker is, of course, fully-aware of all the nuances of the language, and is thus able to phrase a question in just the right way such that it suits the situation, and himself.

Folks, please read the original post here. There are laws in all countries about copyright and many of you are breaking them.

"Abandonware", as you call it, is still subject to copyright laws even if the publisher no longer supports the software or is out of business. After all, someone still owns the assets somewhere.

A case in point: SuperPaint, originally published by Silicon Beach. SuperPaint hasn't been sold for years and nobody supports it anymore. Furthermore, Silicon Beach appears to be long gone.

A little bit of research reveals that Silicon Beach was bought by Aldus, which was in turn bought by Adobe. Adobe happens to be one of the biggest and most powerful software companies and is always out to get people who pirate software (and for good reason--you would too if you lost money because people were passing your work around illegally).

SuperPaint was never released into the public domain. Therefore, it is still under copyright and will be for many more years to come.

The same can be said about the ROMs people have been posting about. They are just as illegal as the software.

Read the FAQ pages on SIIA's page about software piracy. You'll be surprised to learn that abandonware is just as illegal to pirate as the latest version of Office or Photoshop.

The only things that are legal to share/link to here are shareware, freeware, public domain, open source, and software made available by the publisher for anyone (such as Cliff Johnson's old games and Apple's old system downloads).

Note that the only versions of the Mac OS available for free are the ones on Apple's website. This used to not be the case but Apple infamously decided to change their policy on letting user groups (such as the Mac 512 online) pass out system software and older applications. The guy who runs the Mac 512 group/site got a letter about this in 2001 and has it posted; it clearly explains this policy.

Quit pirating stuff and support the industry. If you're not going to use software legally, I suggest selling your computer until you learn the law.

The reason I think we see so many requests for software, is that its getting rarer, and that the usual line of hot and other sources are having issues.
