Apple //e gives no Super Serial Card prompt

I am trying to use ADTPro. When I type IN#<slot no.> <return> and then <ctrl-A> or <ctrl-I> nothing happens. I have reseated the chips, and tried slots 2 and 4. Any ideas?

Also, could I use audio bootstrapping (headphone jack only) to send the ADTPro serial client and then use the serial cable?

You should be greeted immediately with "APPLE SSC:" when you do Ctrl-A.  The fact that it doesn't means the card is bad, the slot is bad, or maybe it's configured for printer rather than modem use.  Have you checked the DIP switches?

Yes.  This will only help you if your SSC actually works, though.

Agreeing to and adding this - there is a black fat chip on a socket with a triangle pointing up. This also determines Printer/Modem set up. Most of the time you can work it without touching this jumper block. That is what it is, a jumper block. But if all settings you try does not work, then it's time to switch the jumper block - just carefully remove it, turn it around so the triangle is pointing down , line up the pins with the holes in the socket and put it in. The settings with this block is:

Triangle Up - Printer

Triangle Down - Modem

Not to the extent that it would affect tanuki65's situation, though.  The relevant issue is the DIP switch configuration - specifically SW1-5 and SW1-6.  Both must be ON in order to respond to Ctrl-A.  Any other config and you need to do Ctrl-I (that's the capital letter "i") in order to get the prompt, and you don't want to be in that situation.

No matter which way the jumper block is oriented, you can use a null modem cable vs. straight-through cable to compensate correctly for it, so that's not the thing to worry about right now.

I have no male null-modem, so that is a factor.

It isn't a defective slot,  it doesn't work in the disk drive slot (6).

In the end it is always the cable that is at fault. You state that you need a null modem connector, right? If need be you can build it. It is similar to a straight through cable but the transmit and received line crossed over.

There are many designs to build it online.

If you have a Mac (DB 9) to Imagewriter (I, not II or LQ) cable, it should also work on the Apple.
