Any significance to these Finder versions?

Any significance to these Finder versions?

I know with ResEdit you can edit things to say whatever you want, found these Finder screens on old disk images, was curious if there was any significance to the X or the *

The Oscar the Grouch trash can was a very popular Res-edit hack. So popular in fact that it was used to spread some nasty viruses. If these are from the same source, then both have likely been hacked. The x and * are likely indicators for the user to help keep track of changes, and types of changes he made to the Finder.

i think the last virus i ever got stuck with was the cdef virus, if i spelled it right. hides itself in the "desktop file"

We talked about in aother thread .85 System being the oldest known version, so this 83 dated Finder 1.0 would also be the oldest known copy?

thanks for your help with all my questions.

I was looking at a guided tour disk today and noticed that it had Finder 1.1h

I have gone back and re-read this thread:

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=14696

As I had to double check, as these pages refer to finder 1.1g

presumably there would be 1.1a....1.1c etc out there

Has anyone else noticed this before, re. 1.1h?

No it doesn't. Just because other versions absolutely existed along the way doesn't mean they ever left the confines of Apple. Unless you mean "out there" as in a box in some ex-Apple engineer's attic, never to see the light of day again.

And yes they have:

As for your other question about the two different versions of Finder 1.0, you are absolutely correct. One is definitely a beta version, or at the very least an earlier version. It also does not support the same Finder features as the "official" 1.0 release either, aside from having different graphics. It's entirely possible Apple revised the software without changing the version number, or intentionally published it as "1.0" to avoid the perception that there was somehow a buggy predecessor to the launch software (since the Finder version was identified to the user, but the System was not - hence the actual System .97 officially called "1.0" as few would be the wiser). Of course considering the software was rushed out the door at the last minute, still full of known bugs, it could easily be a mistake.

Mac128, thank you as always for your wealth of knowledge, yes to clarify when I said there I meant that it must have, or you would think so have existed, even just within Apple at some point.

Sure, probably lost now forever.

Or we can live in hope someone turns up some cool beta version with some interesting Easter eggs etc.
