My Mac sounds like it's doing something (MacOS 8.6) and I'm curious if there's something like Un*x "top" command for Classic MacOS? An activity monitor ...

There is 'about this macintosh' that will tell you what programs are running, but if it is an extension, I'm unsure that there is anything.

That said, launch Sherlock and turn off indexing, see if that stops what you think is happening.

This one sounds like it lets you view background processes and CPU load so it might do it.

About this Mac started showing ram usage around system 4.1, I think(?), and before that it only shows the total system RAM. Anyone know a good utility or desk accessory for Systems 1x-4/5x for monitoring RAM usage?
