There is 'about this macintosh' that will tell you what programs are running, but if it is an extension, I'm unsure that there is anything.
That said, launch Sherlock and turn off indexing, see if that stops what you think is happening.
This one sounds like it lets you view background processes and CPU load so it might do it.

About - Macintosh Garden
When I first saw the System 7 Finder's "About This Macintosh" display, I thought it looked really cool. Then I tried to make it DO something, like switch me to an application when I clicked its icon. I was somewhat disappointed when nothing happened.
