512k analog board cardboard?

I removed the cardboard thing from the analog board of my 512k to check the soldering. Now I wonder, is this part actually required? Would I hurt anything if I just leave it out for the time being?

Assume you mean the sleeve on the outside of the analogue board? In a 512K it should be a white vinyl sleeve, unless it was replaced with the older coated cardboard one at some point. You run very little risk operating it temporarily without the sleeve on, however, the sleeve is there to prevent the solder side from coming in contact with the metallic paint on the inside of the bucket and shorting. This could happen if for some reason you pick it up and move it while it was turned on, or otherwise press in on the bucket. I would not recommend operating it in this condition normally.

... it's worth worth keeping so you know what the analogue board pot adjustments do :)

The sleeve, yes. Sorry my english isn't up to snuff yet. Working on it. ;)

Didn't realise it was vinyl, that's odd. Will check again tomorrow.

I don't plan on ditching it. Just wanted to put the computer back together while I figure out what it's problem is. Or find a way to put the sleeve back and remove again easily. (I cutted the 3 foam pads in half with a blade to remove it.)

Thanks. :)
