Wow, Office Depot has really cut the prices on some of their notebooks, and in particular, the models with the now-defunct HD DVD format drives. And so, here's what I got (demo unit) HP dv9650us:

17" Brightview screen

Intel Core 2 Duo processor

HD DVD drive

HDMI output

dual 160 GB SATA hard drives

Analog/digital TV tuner

Windows Vista Home Premium

nVidia GeForce 8600M GS graphics w/256m video ram

Webcam

b/g/n wireless

Media center remote control

A second remote that stores in the ExpressCard slot

...for under $600, no fooling.

Condition is surprisingly clean and nice save for marks where the security cradle dug into the screen frame, but that netted me an additional discount.

Store staff said it appeared there were no others available locally, but I saw comparable Toshiba models for just a few bucks more. A slightly newer version of the HP with Blu-Ray drive sells for about $1400, so I'm kind of psyched. As far as I can see, there's no reason I can't simply buy a Blu-Ray drive later on. Meanwhile, I actually do have a bunch of HD DVD movies.
