Yeah, I was always under the impression you could use them interchangeably. And I've never had a problem doing so.
I also was under the impression that the shielding was the difference, which probably explains the different readings you're getting on the shells.
Easy way to tell would be if...
I agree that USB/FW drives are ideal.
But, not having the budget for one at the time, several years ago I bought a very inexpensive FW enclosure - like under $20 - for a 60GB IDE laptop HD I had leftover from an iBook repair for a friend.
The drive has proven invaluable, for that whole series...
Sorry to hear about this. There are quite a number of folks with the knowledge (as evidenced by the previous responses) to help - and quite a few with the actual skills.
I know thetechknight has a number of videos on his YouTube channel in which he recaps and otherwise repairs Classic compact...
Just an FYI - in my experience you can put a Quadra 800 motherboard into a Q700 case with no problem. No problems mating to the CPU, the internal speaker, or anything else IIRC.
I've used spray dyes. They work very well, preserving the texture of the plastic.

As for...
Can't answer all your questions with certainty, but yes, the 8500 mobo should work fine in that 7200.
AFAIK the 7200 PSU and mobo connectors (to power, SCSI, floppy, etc.) are all identical to the 7300-7500-7600 series. And I know from personal experience that one can put 8500-8600 mobos into...
@jurschme - I have a VST Firewire ZIP 250 drive, just like this one:

For reasons I can't recall, I also have an extra power adapter for it.
PM me if you're interested. Thanks!
Have owned two of these, one brand new back in '02 as my primary, one used, much more recently ('09 or early '10 I think) just to play with.
Fantastic machines - beautiful, super-function, and perhaps the most fun and nearly "human" of all Macs.
But for modern browsing with multiple...
