After careful deliberation and having allowed several days for cajoling and bribery, I've arbitrarily picked the winners' names out of a hat... winners will receive a splendid commemorative RetroChallenge T-shirt and an equally splendid RC mouse pad – though what any true retrocomputist would...
That's right, geeks... everyone's favourite open-ended, semi-competitive retrocomputing free-for-all is just around the corner. Do you have what it takes to go head-to-head with the hardest-core RetroGeeks in the whole wide world? Me neither, but I do have a bit of time to kill in July...
Those...
This may be blindingly obvious to some, but it took me several years to figure it out and I thought I might save someone else the time ;-)
My wife has an LC 575 that she uses for bookkeeping etc. It's a floppy-only model and has had problems with the hard drive for years – problems that...
Sine there seems to be a glimmer of interest, I thought I'd start a thread.
My Holy Grail at the moment is the Graphical Rhythm Composer software for the EM-U Drumulator.
Considering how few of this year's two dozen entrants actually completed a project, it was surprisingly difficult to pick a top three – and that's only partially down to laziness and procrastination on my part. Anyway, without further ado, the winners are:
FIRST PLACE Aaron Wolfe, Boisy Pitre...
I've noticed this lately... at home on my crappy 56k dial-up, the 68kmla (I have "view new posts" bookmarked) consistently loads faster than Google's home page. Just thought it odd given that Google has about two dozen words and one small graphic... makes you wonder what they're up to behind the...
What are the best (if any) options for fullscreen video playback on a bare bones Plus/Classic? Ideally I'd like to take some existing short mpeg files and convert them to play on the Plus/Classic... assuming this is even possible, what kind of frame-rate would be possible?
Just throwing out an idea here:
There's always been a lot of discussion about multi-tasking on the Apple II which generally doesn't go very far... I think the reason for that there are very few practical applications for it and the resources of the Apple II are somewhat lacking.
How about...
I don't know if it's a case of too many contestants or too few voters, but we seem to have ended up with no less than five RetroChallengers in the top three slots! Without further ado:
*1*
equant took first place with his Grackle68k twitter client for classic Macs.
*2*
A couple of intensive...
It's all over but the crying!
This year's RC was quite productive, with probably a dozen assorted programs written and quite a few creative/fun entries. If anyone would like to vote for their favourite challenges, head on over to the RetroBBS (account sign-up required) and email the SysOp with...
Here's the thing: My mother-in-law has some old Windows software on floppy disk and a Toshiba laptop with no floppy drive... the only machines I have with floppy drives are 68K Macs. I assume that since I can read PC floppies, I can create disk images of them... the real question is, what...
Here's the official announcement:
RetroChallenge 2009 will take place from July 1st to July 31st... the website is currently up at http://www.retrochallenge.net and the BBS can be found at http://telnet://bbs.retrochallenge.net.
Please go to the site and register via the provided email link...
According to most docs the LC575 maximum RAM is 36MB, though I've found a few mentions of 68MB being possible... I wonder if anyone's done this (or more?) and how it turned out. Any stability issues?
So I have a 575 that I keep stubbing my toes on and I thought it might be worth trying to install NetBSD* on it (mainly just so I can learn the rudiments of UNIX)... I have several questions, however:
First off, I'm aware that I would have to replace the processor with a full 040... anyone know...
Here's a disk image containing my rendering of the multicoloured Apple logo in Lo Res graphics mode. It looks okay on an emulator, but the cheap antialiasing really pays off on a real screen.
Applesoft is fun!
It was really tough picking winners, especially since many entrants qualified for multiple categories... not to mention the judges complete lack of consensus. Anyway, without further ado:
[drumroll]
Programming: This was the toughest category to judge, but PrintStar's efforts with The DEC...
This is an idea that's related to the System 6 Browser topic, but I don't think it belongs in that thread.
How feasible would it be for someone (not me) to write a program to translate TCP/IP to serial? My "vision" involves using any serial-equipped Mac with ethernet as a means to provide...
