    blown component on Sony MP-F75W

I want to bring this thread to an end. I replaced the Q4 diode and the drive works like a charm.

iMac G3 does not power on

I'm not sure if the problem is the logic board. I disassembled the remaining bits further. On the back side of the analog board I spotted some suspicious areas. Right under the flyback and under the large transformer it looks like cap leakage. Maybe this is only flux, but why is this not on the...

iMac G3 does not power on

I now freed the analog board in the hopes to spot an bulging or leaking cap. But nothing. All looks exceptional clean. The machine must have been died right after warranty expired. Also the CRT and the anode cap are nearly free of the usual black sud. Are there any caps to look after? There...

iMac G3 does not power on

I got two early 2000 iMac G3. Both of them are in different need of repair. One powers up perfectly but has a cracked case and a scratched screen. The other one looks way better but does not power on. I could make one good machine out of the two but rather would try to repair the non-working...

    blown component on Sony MP-F75W

I'm not that deep into electronics, at least at that level. Could you explain why Q4 blew up when the eject motor was not attached? It blew within a fraction of a second right after turning on the Mac. I could not even try to use the drive at all. Why did Sony design it that way. Its not very...

    blown component on Sony MP-F75W

My drive did blew up components when "used" without the drive eject motor attached. 🧐 But this could be pure coincidence.

    blown component on Sony MP-F75W

It should be a "2SB624" which goes on Q4. I ordered a bunch of these on AliEx and hope to get this drive working again. While Q4 blew up I tested the drive without the eject motor in place. Could this be the root issue of blewing up Q4?

    blown component on Sony MP-F75W

Rest assured I wont throw away the drive at any time soon. :) With the help of a picture search I could validate that the blown component is/was a transistor with a "BV5" marking. I'm currently checking suppliers for a suitable replacement component.

    blown component on Sony MP-F75W

I was renovating one of my Compact Macs floppy disk drive. Its gear broke in pieces. I took the chance to clean and grease it. Upon reconnect it i heard a short electrical crackling. I imeadiately shut down the machine. Upon inspecting i found an broken/chipped component on the disk drives PCB...

LC 475 prone to cap leakage as other LCs

Hmmm, okay. The measurements on the other TDK are fine and "spot on" while nothing is connected.

LC 475 prone to cap leakage as other LCs

Measured while nothing connected to the PSU.

LC 475 prone to cap leakage as other LCs

I replaced the 8.2uf Cap with an 10uf Cap, which stabelized the PSU somewhat. The voltages are now in the expected ranges (except -5V, which is around -3,6V), but they are changeing by .1V ever so often. The other TDK PSU does not show this behaviour. I expect to receive my Apple to VGA adapter...

LC 475 prone to cap leakage as other LCs

I started renovating the machines today. I started with the PSUs as I'm waiting for parts for the boards itself. Two TDK PSUs had visual cap leakage going on. The PCBs were coated with a shiny sticky film. After removing all caps on the low voltage side I soaked them in IPA. After a short time...

LC 475 prone to cap leakage as other LCs

Okay, thanks alot. I'll count the needed caps and do another round of recapping.

LC 475 prone to cap leakage as other LCs

I got myself a lot of three LC475 and one LC. One is missing its RAM and VRAM modules, the others are complete. The batteries are flat, so I cannot test them right away. The boards look dusty but okay and they do not have any signs of cap leakage. I'd like to ask if the later LCs are also prone...

MP-F75W wont write to disks/initialize disks

Okay, than I have to do the inevitable. I'll follow the linked PDF and hope for the best not to make things worse.

MP-F75W wont write to disks/initialize disks

Okay, thanks. But could be a mis-aligned Track Zero sensor be the cause for not writing at all? I would assume if the sensor is mis-aligned wont read at all. Mine does read without problems. If I interpret https://tinkerdifferent.com/threads/superdrive-floppy-maintenance.549/post-5984 correct a...

MP-F75W wont write to disks/initialize disks

Do you mean the photoelectric barrier next to the floppy cable connector? I didnt clean it after the write errors. I'm sure I cleaned it initially. I'll check.

MP-F75W wont write to disks/initialize disks

Another part in my SE30 journey. I assembled the machine and tested it. A few days ago I cleaned/lubed the floppy drive, a Sony MP-F75W, as per https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LWfjsvc8OA. In the assembled machine the drive worked at first. I could read data and write data, initialize disks...

SE / SE30 PSU voltages okay?

I connected an Molex Y-cable to the HDD power cable. From there I connected an Molex to 2*SATA power adapter and connected two old SATA notebook drives. Both do spin up and I measure 5.10V on the 5V line now. The voltage is stable for ten minutes now. I think it is safe to connect the...
