Can you make the Mac SE ROM chip upgradable instead of write-once only?
I patched an emulator Basilisk II Mac SE ROM to extend new features. I’d love to tinker the 68K assembly for my physical Mac SE.
Actually, the middle hole in the top of female adapter is blocked. It is not possible to plug in wrong direction.
I'm thinking of 3D printing a case for SCSI2SD. There is no such model in thingivers yet. I may design one in Fusion 360.
@pcamen
A zipped DD SD card image works for me.
I ordered one from Inertial Computing. It will arrive on Sep 19 tomorrow.
I ordered a SCSI2SD for my Mac SE from Michael in Australia 4 years ago. At that time, he wrote a half-baked user manual. The doc is still half-baked even I revisited now...
@pcamen
I got my AAUI to Ethernet adapter from Ebay yesterday. It is lucky that PB540C comes with MacTCP installed so that I can connect to my Mac SE and copy files over Apple Share.
After I copied iCab web browser from Mac SE, I setup an Apache server in my Dell T20 Linux server to list all...
How do you install OS 7.6 or OS 8.1 in SCSI2SD? Do you install it on BasiliskII and then DD the image to SD?
If you install them directly on PB540C, that requires tons of floppy disk or a external CD-ROM? I have neither of them.
@pcamen
I don't want 8.1 because it is too slow. Even in my PB1400C, 8.1 is way too slow in PPC. Let alone 68K.
I wonder how do you install 8.1 to PowerBook 540c at the beginning? Do you need to fix boot partition like installing SCSI driver?
I did find a SCSI2SD Powerbook edition. In fact, I got a SCSI2SD 4 years ago to renovate my Mac SE.
But I remember at that time it was not easy to create a bootable SD card image for my Mac SE. I need help from Michael (the creator of SCSI2SD) to fix partition table and add SCSI driver manually...
I bid PowerBook 540C recently after placing a watch on PB540C in eBay for 3 years. I knew this is a major upgrade from my 68K Mac collection since this is the last 68K CPU Mac.
My PB didn't come with PCMCIA extension or AAUI Ethernet adapter. It runs on a rare 2.5 inch SCSI hard drive. I really...
Well it sounds like OPEC decrease oil production back in 80s. I believe it is a temporary thing. Whenever the price reach some level, everyone starts to bump up production capacity and make more money.
You know why we have cheap gas now. Because we have shale oil in US. With the development of...
I forgot that I already bought a PATA-to-mSATA adapter and also 128GB Kingston SSD mSATA last year for my iBook G4. But I gave up installing it because there are so many steps to remove and install a new hard drive for iBook G4.
I used carbon copy to clone my hard drive to SSD with...
I picked up a great condition 17'' 1.67Ghz Power Book G4 for $50 from my colleagues at work.
The Apple stock hard drive is slow @5400RPM. I know that it is easier to replace hard drive in PB G4 than my another iBook G4. So again I want to replace it with SSD.
Here is the dilemma I have when...
I'm reading Basilisk II emulation code. To understand the ROM patching in BII emulation, I disassembled Performa ROM with cxmon and radare2 (see wiki I wrote https://github.com/cebix/macemu/wiki/ROM-Analysis-in-Basilisk-II-Emulation#disassemble-original-68k-mac-rom).
Disassemble works but it...
I bought this to store screws
There are 28 compartments for less than 10 bucks.
I also bought 120GB Kingston m-SATA SSD https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CG8GTPO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
But in any case, I haven't swapped it out yet. I followed iFixit instruction...
@carguyty and @butterbuger
I totally agreed with you all on this.
I got m-SATA SSD, m-SATA to USB adapter and m-SATA to IDE adapter. After running carbon copy clone to move data from hard drive to SSD through USB, I can boot it from USB to test if blessed partition work. It just showed no...
Reinventing wheel is fun. I believe classic Mac ROM is 128KB to 512KB. If 68K instruction is average 3 bytes and ignore the data in the rom, you may have around 42K - 170K assembly to type. It is a quite daunting task. It is not infeasible but too much to type. But it is definitely a good...
@Elfen
According to Mactracker, USB 2.0 in G4 can reach 480 Mbit/s around 48 MB/s. It is definitely slower than IDE if you running large file backup in sequential I/O.
I ordered IDE-mSATA adapter from Hong Kong. It is cheap. But I'm happy with spinning hard drive speed on iBook G4 except the...
I haven't figured it out how to boot from USB. There is a lot of reading on open firmware.
I bought a laptop cool stand like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01469DJLM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It does help cooling down temperature and stays below 60C. The only...
@techknight
That's a smart way to design a wifi network. I happened to have a old belkin router to play around with dd-wrt. I should follow the way you suggest. But I can't get wifi working.
salut Galgot,
I got two 3Com 3c589D. But I believed the connectors were broken or may be incompatible...
