System 7.5.5 on Mac Plus and HD20

Yep, that all tracks. 1.4 MB floppy is not happening on a Plus. Behavior if one tries it, from what I read, is as you described. That's good to know too. I think the "For this Macintosh" and "Universal" installs will trigger it. I do remember solid black apples floating around on the...

System 7.5.5 on Mac Plus and HD20

This thread over on lowendmac indicates the Mac Plus ROM isn't aware of 1.4MB floppies, so it seems reasonable to presume if a 1.4MB drive works at all, it will be treated as an 800K drive. https://lowendmac.com/2016/floppy-disk-compatibility-and-incompatibility-in-the-mac-world/

System 7.5.5 on Mac Plus and HD20

Ah, so I remembered it wrong. Thanks for running that test. So it required being booted from 7.0 or better. So if there's a stripped down version of 7.0 from a Disk Tools disk that fits on an 800K floppy, then that should work on a Plus. I read elsewhere yesterday after much googling that if...

System 7.5.5 on Mac Plus and HD20

Yep, that would definitely work. That was kind of the crux of the defect report I filed against the 7.5.3r2 installer when I was a QA tester at Apple on that project. It went something like "You can't install on a Mac Plus without having some other (better) Mac available to work with to either...

System 7.5.5 on Mac Plus and HD20

That's why I was asking if you can post the rest of that "Before you install" text file to see if it says anything about a booted OS limitation. I could absolutely be remembering it wrong. You definitely have the 7.5.3r2 installer running from a booted 7.1! If I had lots of time, the next...

System 7.5.5 on Mac Plus and HD20

Just to re-state the problem: The 7.5.3r2 installer application requires that the computer running it be booted from System 7.5.0 or higher. 7.0 or 7.0.1 may mount the CD-ROM, but the installer will throw an error saying the computer running it has to be running 7.5.0 or higher.

System 7.5.5 on Mac Plus and HD20

Can you post the rest of those steps? I'm curious to see what the other steps are in those official instructions. From what you've got there, I think System 7.0 or better was needed to either see an Apple-ROM CD-drive, or to run an extension to see a non-Apple CD-drive. Note that they don't...

System 7.5.5 on Mac Plus and HD20

The 7.5.3r2 installer must be run from a booted minimum of System 7.5.0, which does not fit on an 800K floppy. The installer for 7.5.3r2 will not run from a booted 7.0.1 or 7.1 Disk Tools disk. (I presume the 7.5.5 installer requires the same.) I pretty sure that the Mac Plus would not boot...

System 7.5.5 on Mac Plus and HD20

I realize this is a necro-thread, but I feel like I'm in a unique position to shed some light on the answer to this question. I was on the installer QA team for "Unity", System 7.5.3 revision 2, and I was personally assigned the task of testing the installer on the Mac Plus. While the OP's...

    Looking for Alto Clock screensaver/app

So I just made the post, then ran across a link to Dali Clock *for Macs with 1-bit displays* and it might be the same app. For anyone interested, you can get it here: https://www.gryphel.com/c/sw/general/daliclok/index.html

    Looking for Alto Clock screensaver/app

Years ago, I had an app that I could run on my Mac Plus called "Alto Clock". It was a port of a digital clock screensaver that ran on the Xerox Alto computer. I used it as a desk clock in my kids' room for many years. I've lost the disk that had the app on it, and I have not been able to find...

Help me out with details on OrangeMicro 486 DX2 Nubus card.

I've got a full-length OrangeMicro OrangePC Cyrix Cx486 DX2 MS-DOS Nubus card with a 72-pin RAM simm on it. I believe I'm the second owner, and I've had it since around 1996, when I was an employee at Apple. I either bought it from another Apple employee, or I bought it used at one of the Bay...

Plus Analog Board C1: Will 4 uF work?

Digikey's 3.9uF cap worked great. Last time C1 blew, I just swapped analog boards. This time I repaired the original analog board by replacing C1 with the Digikey cap, swapped the boards, and it fired right up, working perfectly. Thanks guys! I use this Mac Plus to run Altoclock off a...

Plus Analog Board C1: Will 4 uF work?

I just want to point out in answer to the question in my original post, one should not attempt to use a normal 4uF electrolytic (polarized) cap in place of C1. C1 is a bipolar cap, replace it with the Digikey part mentioned in this thread. I read on another site that replacing C1 with a...

Plus Analog Board C1: Will 4 uF work?

I'm not worried about getting a discount on a $3 part. Mine arrived yesterday, I hope to find some time to do the repair and test the board some time this week. I bought a couple extras, so if there are people needing this part, they can shoot me a PM.

Plus Analog Board C1: Will 4 uF work?

I ordered four of them from DigiKey, we'll see how they do, I have two analog boards to repair right now, and this will give me two spares. If they work out really well, I'll get some more to supply to people on the forum.

Plus Analog Board C1: Will 4 uF work?

Ah, thanks for that, I was looking a Mouser, and the closest I could find there was a 4 uF.

Plus Analog Board C1: Will 4 uF work?

My poor Plus just had its second Analog Board die, most likely C1, as I have the vertical line down the middle of the screen. As I inspect the previous Analog Board I had in it, C1 has vented its top. The one on this particular Analog Board is a 3.9 uF, 35 volt electrolytic. I've seen other...
