I learned today that PCMCIA ethernet dongles are not all interchangeable. Only a couple of dollars for that lesson, but worth putting down here to save someone else if they do a search.

I've done enough looking around to be convinced that asking the advice of someone who's done a lot of this sort of thing is the way to go. So, that said:
Has anyone here put a CF Card into a PB180 for a hard drive? I have a PB1400c that plays nice with a CF Card, but I notice that the pins on...
It works. I used Audion's MP3Pro encoder to make files at 64Kbps Stereo, and then fiddled with the MP3Dec preferences to find an acceptable level of cpu loading. I mean, it's no great shakes compared to how even a slightly later vintage computer could handle .mp3 decompression, but you can...
I have 7.6.1 and I'd be interested in running on my IIci--since I have an accelerator and sufficient RAM it's not a dog--but I sense that there is a lot of extraneous in there that just takes up space and perhaps memory in terms of control panels and extensions. Does anyone have experience...
Looking for a bit of code that will work on a PB1400c to make compressed files from CDs on OS 8.6 or 9.1. Anyone know of anything that will work? I tried iTunes 2.x on OS 9.1 and no dice. Perhaps there's an extension I am missing?
Best,
John
I got a 1400c today in the mail. I popped it open, and after the obligatory fire it up and see what's on it (OS9.1, Photoshop 4, some other stuff) I got out the windex wipes and the compressed air and the screwdrivers and got to work field stripping it.
When I got the keyboard up and saw the...
Picked up a PB1400, 64MB with a 250MHz NuTech accelerator--equipment was in pretty good shape. It is running 9.1 right now and I am in the middle of reconfiguring it with a CF card. Details down in the PPC Forum.

Anyone run across any software that runs in OS8.6 that can manipulate an mp3 file, say, change the sample rate? I have an older mac I am doing some mpegdec testing on and want to get the sample rate down to less than 128kbps.
Best,
John
I took apart the pair of 180s I have and pushed the best parts (the 240MB hard drive and 8MB of RAM) over to the better looking machine in preparation for it being sent as a nostalgia bomb to an old friend of mine. Interestingly, one of them was running 7.1 and the other 7.5.5. Booted up fine...
Here's a question: If I roll the dice and get another 1400c for the purposes of cannibalising its RAM to add to the one I have that is sitting at 32MB, will that work? I've read that sometimes stacking memory of different brands = no worky.

John
Heh. Installed the old gaming legend on my PB1400 and called up my friend. He said "Uh, I don't think Battle.Net is still up."
Heheheh.
But a real challenge would be running Diablo on a PB1400, another machine running it on a Win95 virtual machine, and then finding a way to emulate IPX over...
I try and figure things out by myself first, but since I am new at this I am running into a lot of new situations. I recently installed a Daystar Powercache card (P33 designation) in my IIci and downloaded and installed the control panel from Daystar, but I do not notice any performance...
I picked one up. Looks like a 50MHz 030 accelerator, based on Derrick Garbell's article here:
http://www.wap.org/journal/IIciwicked/default.html
I have the same card minus the large square chip just right of center of what's posted. I am guessing that the missing chip is the FPU. Are the...
One of my IIcis has no hard drive. Rather than look for a 50-pin SCSI drive, I was considering trying the CF Card route. I would eventually like to go that way for all my systems if it works nicely. Has anyone done this and how did they go about it?
I am considering one of the Addonics...
Has anyone had difficulty getting Civilization II to install on a PB1400c? Mine doesn't like it, the sounds it's making makes me think it's having trouble mounting the CD, though it can get the directory open so I can doubleclick on the install icon. Other CDs (the 1400 series CD and audio...
Picked up a full set of PageMaker 4.0 for a pretty good price--now I know why I guess. If I don't have the registration codes for it, even though I have everything else, I pretty much have a set of docs and some 3.5" floppies that I can use for something else, huh?
Best,
John
Received a PB180 today in exchange for $25. I was impressed by how nice it was. Hardly any apparent use at all from the look of the keys. No plastic degradation or anything. When I was opening the package in the garage I had my normal array of clorox wipes and my compressor fired up, but...
At least that's what I want it to end up being. I got a bit of a bug lately and have been buying up IIcis from the eBay crapshoot service. I haven't been totally disappointed but I did get one box without a hard drive, a nice complete PageMaker 4.0 without registration code, and a seller...
