A lot of those cheap 030s and 040s are fake, be wary of that.

Have a look at https://github.com/TheRealBolle/Tokamac-LC. It does require surface mount soldering skills and it's not cheap to get all the components to build a one-off Tokamac clone. It's cheaper to buy an LC 475.

How much would the components cost vs the cost of a LC 475? And now that I think of it a 475 motherboard might actually fit in my LC case with some mods

A real 040 is probably around $70, maybe more? That's just the 040... the other parts I think do add up to another $100 or so. Check eBay sold listings for 475 prices.

And for the Tokamac, then you need to find someone with the right programmer who can program the XC1736 PROM chip... It's a lot of effort when you can just buy a 475.

People are selling whole 475’s for upwards of $500 on eBay… cheapest 475 motherboard on there is $140 and it’s crap. Whereas there are a few real 68LC040’s on eBay for $20.

Okay I've done SMD before when I recapped the LC but man... the tiny legs on those IC's make me quake in my boots. There's no way I can do them with my basic soldering iron.
I don't think a 475 is in my budget, but if the Tokomac is, perhaps I can have some PCB company do the PCB+SMD instead, if only they didn't force me to buy minimum 5 boards! And I'm not sure if those ICs on the Tokomac are still made.

Yeah, some of the chips aren't available new, so you'd have to source good parts and ship them to the assembly place, and they'd charge more. The FPGA is hard to get in good condition without spending about $10 to $20 each, for the one chip. The PROM is also hard to get, and even harder to program... And at the end of it all, your board might not work.

It will take less time and effort to mow a few lawns for neighbours and use the money to buy a 475.
