Internet via Bluetooth - eMac and Samsung troubles

I think the Mac would need to detect the phone as a USB modem, not a mass-storage device. Probably a menu setting on the phone. Also check the APN for tethering is correct on the phone. I have heard carriers can disable USB tethering in the network, but I don't know how they detect when it is...

Cutting holes in the priceless GeForce 4Ti for ventilation

SSIA; this was one of those things which "seemed like a good idea at the time ;" The full length GF4 is a bit of a problem in a QuickSilver (in my opinion), because it is designed to work with the MDD layout and in QS it blocks all the airflow to the pci slot area. So I thought I'd cut a big...

Why did Apple leave off the L3 cache on some G4 machines?

I can confirm that L3 makes "all the difference". My son has a quicksilver (actually a DA logic board), overclocked to 150MHz FSB. The 1.5GB ram is running CAS2 at that speed, and GeForce 4 Ti graphics under OS9. I think this is pretty much the fastest possible setup. For a long time, I was...

    SPD Chip Programming

Hmm... Not sure about that. I have in the past (many times) "hot plugged" a stick with bad SPD, while the machine is idle at open firmware or boot menu, but that is a TERRIBLE idea and you should not do it... Working on under warranty hardware and with essentially unlimited replacement parts...

    SPD Chip Programming

DIMM First Aid does something... I think it copies the profile from working sticks to non-working ones. I too would like a better solution then keeping a collection of PC desktop and laptops just to run SPDTool...

    Quicksilver vs. MDD

Hmmm... I have similar issues with a couple of mine re: the fans and FireWire externals, even on a machine with only a stock video card and 1 HDD). I wonder if the 24v component is inadequate (mine are all AcBel P/S, which seem more reliable than the Samsungs) That might fit with ADC problems...

iMac G5. High "Memory Controller" temp

I didn't catch whether you were talking about iSight or not (iSights in my experience have far more graphics troubles), but anyway at least the ALS model has a chip on the back of the board with a heatsink. the thermal compound there might need replacement.

    Quicksilver vs. MDD

I fix Macs for a living. Not many people repair PPC hardware anymore, but from my experience pre-MDDs are way more reliable. Finding a fast processor may take a little more effort, but I think you get a better machine. FWIW, the DA and QSs are essentially the same board, and there are three...

SDHC -> 2.5" IDE in an iBook G4: any experiences?

A compact flash card _can_ be made to perform very well (I replaced the optical in a Macbook that I used as a car computer for awhile). the trick is to manually align the partition tables and filesystems to erase-block boundaries ie: 64k or higher. this is much more effective with old HFS than...

    Lose a Sawtooth?

Since we're diverging into nostalgia... I sincerely regret recycling my IIci and my Apple ][ stuff, my color classic (would have loved to frankenmac upgrade it), but most of all, I miss my SE/30. Oh to have loaded it with 128MB and a gray scale graphics card...

    MacOS 8.6 on "Sawtooth" G4

omfg, Sonnet- the "it just works people", I will totally check that out when my kids are awake... they get a little annoyed when I sneak into their rooms at night to use their computers. Thankyou, I was going to go looking for that. I plugged a 800MHz QS2002 (no L3 cache) up, and with either...

    MacOS 8.6 on "Sawtooth" G4

of course lba-48 is optional, I included it as much as an example of how to set multiple variables as anything else. It does seem to work on my sawtooth, (Uni North Rev 3 btw), but I haven't really tested it. I really doubt open firmware can boot anything from it. It works great on a DA board...

    Lose a Sawtooth?

I typically try and confine my hoarding to"best of bread" type stuff. I had my sawtooth cooking at 133mhz fsb for awhile, running a quicksilver 933 chip, but never finished dremmeling the case so it could close. That internal FireWire port was pretty handy ; )

    Lose a Sawtooth?

my $.02, when faced with the same dilemma (and the exact same GF motivation, though not quite as massive a collection as yours), I opted to ditch my GigE/Mystics. My reasoning, the Sawtooth power LED is green/orange, and it still runs OS 8. No ADC power though... If it's about consolidating...

    MacOS 8.6 on "Sawtooth" G4

Note- I've updated the patch slightly based on some research... the Sawtooth 8.6 only seems to like 7400 and 7410 processor models. Reading some opensource PPC code online lead me to believe some 7410s might be a little different then other 74xxs, and the closest match to my 7455 (a ver 3)...
