I used the twisty method when recapping my SE/30, and I agree - it worked well, with no lifted pads. Just gentle motions and they come off easily.

Did that a couple of times, but the simasimac kept happening, so decided to go through with the recapping. Got rid of the substance on the board though, which I'm sure was a good thing.

Also wanted to mention that when the HD is doing it's speed up/slow down thing, it will eventually spin down completely, after which there is a faint high pitched whine that is audible for a short time, then fades away. Just another piece of information..
