What am I doing wrong w/BlueSCSI and MacPack?

I am using the System 6.0.8 boot image linked from the BlueSCSI site as my primary boot. That works fine (and boots in seconds, yay solid state storage). But I want to get some applications into the image.

I downloaded MacPack and renamed the vhd to hda. I put the hda on my SD card with an appropriate name. The system now boots into 6.0.8 as normal but then I get a spinning watch cursor for a LOOOOOOONG time.... followed by a massive crash like this pic.

What am I doing wrong? This is a 4MB SE which is otherwise known stable and working. I was wondering if there was some conversion step I need to do - Google says Disk Jockey but Disk Jockey is for creating images, not converting them...?

Wait, so you are now using a different image rather than the original one?
No. I want to use the bare 6.0.8 image as my base so I'm booting off that. So my SD card has:
HD0-OpenRetroSCSI-6.0.8-500M.hda
then I add HD1-whatever.hda

System boots off HD0 and I expect to see HD1 mount whenever it gets around to it. For example I did this with a blank HD1 image so I could copy all the stuff off the internal HDDs in the SEs I have.

With other images this has worked fine and mounted both devices, but with MacPack not so much. I get this crash.

Perhaps the image is just corrupted then. I’d just find a replacement or get the software piecemeal from elsewhere.
I've downloaded it twice from two sources. No dice.
I really only want a newer version of MS-Word than the one I currently have. Nothing else matters :)

So essentially it wasn’t made for use on a real Plus then?
Guys, I am either doing too much crack cocaine today, or not enough. Actually in my area of the world I guess the tipple of choice is meth, but my parents were dentists so that doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

1. Who mentioned a Plus, ever? Not that it makes any difference but the machine I'm using is an SE
2. I'm not attempting to use this image as a boot device. I have a working boot device that makes me very happy and makes my tummy feel warm and cozy because it's System 6.0.8 and I love System 6.0.8 and the SE is a happy puppy running 6.0.8
3. I am simply attempting to mount this disk image so that I can drag and drop a few interesting applications onto my actual boot image.

All of the resources I can find to download (say) MS-Word 5.1a are Stuffit archives which is cool and all but there's no way I can mount that on a BlueSCSI. And I have yet to find a simple utility that will let me dump files into a .hda image.

Right now I am messing about on infinitemac.org to see if I can make an hda-o-stuff there. Jury is still out on that.

I’ve used MacPack in the past the same exact way you are attempting, and it worked just fine. Just downloaded and renamed it to vhd (with the appropriate SCSI id) and it just worked. It’s possible that your machine is booting off the MacPack 6.0.8, not your original image, and maybe there’s some compatibility issue. MacPac comes with multiple OS’s on the same volume (including 6.0.8). I would try booting off a floppy, to see if it boots/mounts, then explicitly set the startup disk.

SE has been CR2032-upgraded for PRAM battery, and startup disk is set explicitly to HD0. I know it's booting off that image because that's what mounts first. It boots as expected, shows the desktop and the relevant open folders, then flips to the spinning watch cursor while it tries to mount the second HDD image. I was almost wondering if there's too much stuff in the desktop file, or if I should maybe try and rebuild the desktop file.

Well, the infinitemac.org image mounted without issue, let's see if it even has what I want on it :)

Mentioned Plus because the image says it’s for a Plus-type machine…not that you were using one. I was differentiating real hardware vs emulated, not your specific machine.

Glad you got it mounting. I was just trying to ascertain just what the setup was. As for adding files to a .hda, what sort of machine are you using, a PC or a Mac?
