IIci internal 1.4k floppy drive does not spin up nor seek

Working with a problematic drive. It is a 1.4K drive from a IIci that doesn't spin up. There is no head movement on boot. It does seem to "recognize" a disk with insertion but does not seem to move, head seek or spin with insertion. The only indication that it is "working" at all is when a disk is inserted the computer dialog states the disk is unreadable and prompts to Eject, One-sided or two sided inialize. There is no response from the drive from any of the choices. Even the eject does not cause the disk to eject.

The drive is lubed and the manual eject works. The eject gear has been replaced. I recapped it as well to see if that would help, no dice.
I have changed the cable without any change.

I just need some direction as to how to proceed.
I have a volt meter but not an occiliscope. Continuity on the Floppy port to the board.

Thanks for any direction.

Hmmm, I'd be tempted to chuck the drive into an A9M0106 and see if it works on the external port. If it does, then you've a motherboard issue involving the internal port. If not, then maybe one of the motors on the drive failed, or another component failed.

I presume you don’t have another floppy drive you can swap it around with? Also is it the correct floppy drive for the IIci? As I recall the later manual inject models didn’t work properly with older Macs

On a separate thread there was mention of the Q3 and Q9 resistors being the problem. When I put my ear to the drive I do hear a faint buzz from the motor?

I’ll look into testing on another machine. I have an se/30 too but it is being fixed in a separate repair. I know the external port works on the IIci and I did plug it into the floppy emu floppy port adapter to check to see if it was a problem with the internal port vs external port. I know the floppy emu works fine on the IIci however.

Going to look at those resistors tonight….

Thanks for the ideas

The later drives do work mechanically and electronically. Issue is that the slot is too small to push the disk in all the way. Have to use another disk to push the one you want to use into place. Dealt with this on one of my previous Centris 650 machines that had a PowerMac 7100 style drive installed.

when the disk is in, the top carrier must drop and a switch will spin the disk.

So, this can be faulty or the carrier can be twisted.

I'm starting to think it is the Floppy controls on the logic board that I need to address. I already have some power off issues with the board that I need to look into given that capacitor leak affected that area of the board. It has been recapped but the previous owner needed to do some bodge wires to remedy power on -- still has soft power off problems.

I did take a stepper motor and eject motor from another floppy, replaced the Q3/Q9, and cleaned up the drive without a difference. It seems to have the same problem with the internal or external port. I do clearly hear a buzz from the stepper motor. There is no other movement to suggest any part of the drive is working -- no head movement, no eject.... At the moment, I don't have my SE/30 operational to test the drive on -- this would be vital to exclude the drive issue but I'm pretty sure I did this at the beginning when my SE/30 was working on the external port without it working.

Does it make sense that the physical floppy would not work (it is a 1.44 drive) but the floppy emu would. I'm guessing the drive motor commands would be ignored by the Floppy Emu but would be vital to the physical drive.

Any one have any suggestions on where on the board to focus my attention?

Thanks
