Recently-recapped SE/30 went "bang" - a tantalum-capacitor cautionary atle

Agreed. I've been using tantalums even though I don't like them and, to be honest, they've been fine for me - but if I were starting again or making recommendations to anyone else, solid polymer would probably be the top of my list.

Any brand you'd recommend ?

I think the ones I've used are Wurth ones but the same holds true as for any other capacitor, really - the reputable brands are basically all fine for our purposes, and no name ones are best avoided.

Interesting. Does the 12v supply ever spike or reverse, like on power-up maybe? Or does that cap see a lot of RMS current?

I've never seen a 16v tantalum short out at 12v, and Quicksilver and MDD Power Macs are full of them. I've seen dual 1GHz Quicksilver CPU boards that were badly warped and discolored after years and years of running hot, but never a blown tantalum...
