System 7 Tune-Up (1.44 mb disk image)

Hello All,

Would anyone be willing to provide an image file for System 7 Tune-Up 1.1.1?

I'm running 7.0.1 on my SE/30 and would like to patch it up before continuing to update to 7.5.5.

I have found image files but they're all 800k and I am unable to use them with Disk Copy to write them to a 1.44 MB floppy.

Any help much appreciated.

Regards,

mdent23

IIRC, Tune Up was only distributed on 800k floppies. I've never seen a 1.44meg Tune Up disk before. I guess it was for compatibility issues. The Plus can't handle 1.44meg disks so it had to be 800k.

You can expand the image using Disk Copy 4.2 or 6 on your SE/30. Depends on which software was used to create the image. DC6 is preferred here.

Then just drag & drop the files (not the floppy icon itself) to the 1.44meg floppy

And Done.

Yes, the 1.44meg floppy won't be exactly like the image, but who cares about originality? You just want to update your software.

BTW, why don't you run the installer directly from the expended image?

i think i have System 7 Tune-up for LC III, so probably 1.44 Mb floppy.

Only French, so don't think it will help.

I have one of those big System 7 boxes. I have two sets of disks in that box, one is for 800k systems the other for Superdrive equipped Macs. I should make backups of these...

Anyway.

I was able to find some pictures on the net and I believe there were two designs:

early System 7 tune up: http://cdn.wallapop.com/shnm-portlet/images?pictureId=69378100&pictureSize=W640

late one: http://cdn1.goughlui.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/System-7-Tune-Up.jpg

I think I have both of these at home, but in French as well.  :)

But both of them are 800k floppies though.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it did exist in 1.44meg format. I'd be interested to know.

If you have a USB floppy drive and something running a 'nix os you can dd the 800k images onto 1.4mb floppy's and they'll mount just fine on the mac, I have done that before and it worked fine

Unless you have a Mac running El Capitan, that is.  :(

Glad to be a Mavericks User  ;)

Haven't tried it with Disk Copy 6, will do so as well as trying to run directly from the expanded image.

max1zzz, I do have a USB floppy drive a TiBook running Tiger that plays nice with Mac OS Standard formatting too so this is another avenue to try out. Didn't even think of the dd command, that's a great idea.

BadGoldEagle I can't stand the name "El Capitan;" so glad to hear the new macOS is "Sierra," a much better name ;)

With DC6, you can "open" any image and use its contents. You can run the installer from there. I'm sure it will work.

I agree with you. To tell you the truth, I didn't even like the name Yosemite or Mavericks. I like big cats!

Good luck with your SE/30 resto btw

Thank you, I'll keep you posted on this thread once I've tried to run off DC6.

Onward!

I have had a look at my disks this morning, all disks are 1.44 Mb, but the Tune-Up is 800 k only, came all from the same computer, so probably Tune-Up was only available in 800 k size.

I checked my disks as well. Turns out I have 3 System Tune-Up disks. All of them were 800k.
Would you happen to have an image file or the actual application file of Disk Copy 6 that I could get onto my TiBook to load onto a floppy?

Having a hard time finding a workable DC6 file. My SE/30 no-likey.

There you go: https://mega.nz/#!oBZAUDCZ!XBFgV_bS_vLMDxMD41dTSUXApflf1UoJpGGRqwM_moc

Inside the .zip file you will find: a .sit and the .image which contains DC6 only (The app itself uses a whopping 1.1meg!).

Sometimes the images get corrupted (win 7 does that), that's why I've included a .sit which won't.

It is a 1.44meg image so you can dd the image onto a blank floppy using your Tibook.

(I downloaded the file from the Mac Garden and used Importfl to access the file in mini vMac. Then I used stuffit to expand the .sit and finally DC6 to create an image, of itself)

This was the ticket, BadGoldEagle!! DC6 handled the TuneUp image just fine and running the installer was a breeze; I shaved three whole seconds off startup time and now I can continue updating to 7.5.5 :D

Thanks a million!
