PPC G4 MDD

I purchased my first Mac from a friend ages ago for $150 and just realised that it's a single 1.25Ghz CPU model. I'd kind of like to upgrade it to a dual as making music on it isn't the easiest because of software demands that the CPU can't really handle. I also have a G5 7,3 with 4 GB ram.

Do you run Mac OS 9 or OS X on it when using the music software?

If the latter, I would be tempted to use the G5 for the music. Especially with the fact that a stock MDD is not the quietest machine when running, especially when there are two processors instead of one.

You’re not kidding. WhenI bought my dual 1.25 2003 MDD G4 in 2003, I was shocked at how loud it was in OSX Panther. Then I booted into OS9, and listened in horror as my expensive new computer produced a sound that resembled my vacuum cleaner, both in tone and in loudness.

Exactly. Did a good impersonation of a shop vac trying to lift a brick. I wound up downgrading mine from a dual 1 GHz processor card to a single. Became tolerable.

I'd also like to know how much strain the extra CPU puts on the fragile power supply? I have a dual card ready to go into my single 1.25ghz machine, but I am reticent to do so, as I'm not sure how much of a real world performance bump it would give, and it will make everything quite a bit hotter/more power draw. any thoughts?
