180c display question

Here is the 180c display after recap. Looks good from the front. Is it normal to see lighter area in middle when looking from the side?

Ok, she looks fine from front, but angles look nasty.. should i reflow the caps? Or is this display failing?

It’s the beginnings of vinegar syndrome from the looks of it. You can see the bubbling head on in the photos.

Ok, that can be replaced correct? I know probably a pain, but these displays hard to come by lol

Yes, you would need to peel the old film off, angrily remove the old decrepit adhesive because it acts like glue, and then locate replacement film of the correct angle. What angle that is is unknown to me, but if enough people do these repairs we can start an index of what angles correspond with what systems. It also likely won’t look factory after unfortunately, new film will give the screen a different look.

Yeah, i suppose! Had no idea that you have to worry about angles too..it is worth saving, but in no rush to try it yet. How do you remove adhesive? Isopropyl?

I've never had to do it myself (yet...) but from the accounts I've heard, IPA doesn't do too well. I definitely remember acetone being mentioned as working well (and it won't damage the glass) but you'd have to be careful not to get it on any of the electrical components I'm sure. I seem to also remember warm soapy water being mentioned, although I may be confusing this with some other adhesive that needed to be removed somewhere. There's a thread on it, I'll go fetch it up from the depths of the 68k PowerBook section.

You can determine the angle using a variable polarizer if you need to. You change the polarization until it is perfectly clear, which only happens when the angles align, and that tells you what the angle is.
