Mac Plus M0100 mouse only moves horizontally

I picked up a Macintosh Plus the other day. It boots just fine, but the mouse that came with it (model M0100) doesn’t move vertically. Horizontal movement and the button work, though.

I cleaned the mouse thoroughly inside and out and confirmed continuity of the mouse wire and circuit paths on the mouse board, per this post. Swapping the X and Y wire pairs resulted in the capstans controlling the opposite directions as expected but vertical still didnt work, while horizontal still did, so it’s not the sensors. Now I’m at a loss where to go from here, since everything on the mouse seems to be okay.

Could the problem be with the computer? How would I go about diagnosing and fixing that?

I have this issue as well, but the vertical works and the horizontal does not.

Like clpo13, the issue is seen on a Mac Plus that otherwise works normally.

Since I have multiple machines and mice, I verified that two, separate, known working mice demonstrated this same behavior on the machine in question, so it is definitely a problem with the Mac and not the mouse.  All I found in the dead Mac Scrolls were fixes for mice issues.  Im looking through Inside Macintosh and it gives a place to start looking (hardware, III-29) but if anyone has encountered this problem already and has a fix, let us know.

Well, almost four years later and I finally figured out what was going on. I don't know how much this will help anyone else running into a similar problem, but for me it was simply a broken trace on the logic board between pin 9 of the mouse port and the nearest RC filter. Once I repaired the trace, the mouse worked exactly as expected.

Did you work until today only with the horizontal movement? I can feel your pain

You can do a lot with keyboard shortcuts! But no, I shelved it until I came across a known-good mouse recently, and it got me thinking about the problem again.
