Are G5 cases pretty much interchangable?

Was wondering if G5 towers were all custom inside (mounting points not the motherboards). I know the PCIE models looks a bit different in the rear but are the others before that swappable?

I'm not sure.

I only had experience with one, and the two seemed similar enough that, in general, everything swapped over without much fuss.

I'm fairly confident that the later PCIe G5's are considerably different than the older models internally. Some minor parts might be interchangeable, but I suspect all the important ones aren't

I'd take an educated guess in that switching motherboards between same AGP and PCI-E (differentiating water cooled too) G5 models is possible - but you would never want to - it's really hard work dismantling a G5, and the CPUs are very fragile.

You could probably get a second-hand G5 of the same model dirt cheap than to switch things around.

I have 2 2.5 Quad and 1 2.5 DP and I can tell you that the PCI-e Model has 3 usb ports in the back instead of 2 so I don't think it's possible. Also, I know from rebuilding a Couple of LCSs that the standoffs are arranged differently. Oh and the PCIe models have separate leads that connect directly to the cpu so I would imagine that the older case does'nt have those standoffs either.

I agree with this, from what I've seen as well the motherboard Standoffs are sometimes placed in different locations. For example in the top right corner of the motherboard some cases have two standoffs right next to each other, and I've seen others with only one there. Which, I suppose you could just get one of those special screw drivers or a pliers and take them out. I've done it before on ATX cases, I see no reason why they shouldn't work here. IO Backplate is another story.. If that doesn't match up you're going to have a bad day.
