RaSCSI without ICs?

So I'd really like to make this project, but I don't have the ICs they use.

Would it be OK if I just direct wired it?

Also, wiring stuff/pinouts is not my strong suit. I might have more questions about wiring later.

No, I don't think so. The GPIO pins on the Raspberry PI are not spec'ed to be 5v tolerant so it's a pretty sure thing you'll smoke it without the buffers. (I dunno, maybe for the pins that are only inputs or outputs you could get by with some current-limiting resistors if the 3.3v output swing of from the Pi turns out to be enough to work the inputs on the SCSI bus side, but the bidirectional data pins realistically need to have some voltage shifting buffers in front of them.)

The buffers aren't exactly an exotic part, you should be able to buy them.

I used RaSCSI with my Macs with a Pi 3 and Zero W, every time with a direct wiring, but honestly it doesn't work so good.

My Macs and their SCSI controllers are still alive.

Nope, I tested it with a IIci and a IIsi, nothing work...
