Since the drive is getting power, I assume it must be the motherboard. But shouldn't the drive spin up if it's getting power, EVEN IF the mobo can't see it?

That would be my understanding, unless the drive is a server type that looks for a sequential boot signal of some kind in order to avoid overloading the PSU with multiple HDDs starting up all at once.

A corresondent over on DealMac suggests that maybe the power supply is adequate to run the drive but not to start it up. Does that sound likely to anyone here? Testing would require more sophistication (and time) than I have.

Balderdash! (that testing sophistication notion anyway) That could easily be the case, run the HDD off your external drive case's PSU while it's hooked up to the monitor passthru or the same power strip as the CPU (for common ground) and the HDD is cabled to the internal SCSI connector, piece of cake!

quote:

PS Dunbar: The IIfx requires a special (black) terminator at the end of any external SCSI chain.

AYUP! I think ~copxy posted the spec on the resistor pack somewhere here if you don't have one.

quote:

It also requires a terminator between the ribbon cable and the internal hard drive IF the drive is not internally terminated, which as far as I can determine means made before 1990. My 160MB original drive has no such terminator, and never needed one.

IIRC, that one was a white "filter" or something like that? I think it had to do with the build date of the mobo, not the drive, but it has been a while since i read it . . . =8-/

Finally got back here, after being locked out for a week by the server problems (thanks fer fixin', ~Coxy!).

But I'm having trouble parsing that sentence. 'The monitor passthru'???

The outlet on the IIfx's PSU normally used for the monitor.

Oh, the AC outlet! (I almost never use it for the monitor, so don't think f it as a 'monitor passthrough').

It occurs to me that I could also test the theory by swapping the power supply I just got with Cinemo's old case. That one does boot my old HD fine.

Now to find some time to play with this stuff. . . I've got people after me to do all kinds of (less pleasant) chores.

Thanks for the suggestion.
