I just got a FREE Synoptics Lattisnet Model 3000 Concentrator for my new mac network. And a free Industrial PC IAC-C800A case, which will probably house my performa hack (which is almost complete!) I also found a 486 Overdrive PC with 65mbs of 30 pin ram (which was quite a find, as I beleive those machines were quite rare). Believe it or not, all of these machines are in perfect working condition, and all from a BIN!!! outside a charity computer place near where I live. Does anyone else have any of these machines, and have done something interesting with them?? PLease let us know. Cheers. |

That bin sounds like a potential gold mine. Have you ever talked to the people at that charity computer place? You might convince them to accept Macs or other equipment that they might not usually take if you offer them a small incentive or do some volunteer work at the place.Happy Dumpster Diving! That's quite a find! What size are the individual 30-pin SIMMS? The biggest I've ever found were 4 Mb, but I've heard they go larger.I have a 486DX/66 that has Red Hat Linux 6.2 installed on it. 6.2 is really picky on what video card is in there and sometimes on the chipset. It would be best to check the HCL on Red Hat's website. Sadly, this box is just sitting around right now. It will probably be back into service whenever I get into a more permanent residence (with cable or DSL) Then I've got an IBM PS/2 Model 60 luggable tower (it has a handle(!)) It's like a 286/16(!!) but it can run AIX with a big enough hard drive. The only trouble with the hard drive is it's ESDI(! hard to find) I've also got a PS/2 386/25 desktop workstation which also has MCA. I downloaded a DOS TCP/IP boot disk from somewhere and could copy files from my PIII! 486 overdrives (think they are 83mhz pentiums) are not exactly common. But when a pentium motherboard and chip are like giveaways these days whats the point? I have a motherboard collecting dust that has an amd 486/133 that oc's to 160 with no problems (40x4) and thats as fast if not faster then an intel 486 overdrive. As far as 30 pin simms go we have the following: 1mb 4mb 8mb (rare as hell) 16mb I have 4x16mb 30 pin simms in my q950 among other ram.

Does anyone have one of those Synoptics network hubs, and the Industrail PC, does anyone have any of those types of machines? Cheers

Yes but what does NT also have? A windows component I would also be highly surprised if NT is faster than any *nix on an old PC... It's seems like it can support mac files including both forks but you have to the shared volume on a NTSF partition. http://is-it-true.org/nt/atips/atips312.shtml Editor of the printed word, Ministry of 68k Truths (mini6) ------------------ PowerCD, Mac HD 20, SE, Classic II, IIx, IIvi, PB 170, LC 475, LC 575, Quadra 650, Performa 5200, iMac 333 How you like d'em apples?! |

Truly, to do anything good with NT, you basically need an NTFS partition... Yeah, it always preserves the resource forks. NT 4 workstation ran wonderfully onmy 486/66 with only 24 MB of RAM.... I'm certain that it could do nearly everything my TiBook does... (had I more software for it that is....) It's just like any older computer... you just have to know what to put on it... I'm assuming you weren't running SP6a. That has a way of slowing things down. quote: As far as Windows goes, NTFS is the future. No-one who sells brand new PCs with '2k or XP uses FAT32 anymore do they?
I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did. Some people don't want to get involved with the permissions. Little kids like to lock everyone out of the hard drive using permissions. quote: Definately. As far as Windows goes, NTFS is the future.
Just make sure you defragment with Diskeeper. Preferably the latest build of 7.0 quote: I would also be highly surprised if NT is faster than any *nix on an old PC...

NTFS really isn't that bad... it's just the same as OSX and we all deal with that and the problems with file ownership it tosses at us... alot of the time my applications folder doesn't belong to me... or the places where my iTunes and such are stored...I wasn't running servicepacks... what do the NT4 SPs do anyway? as it is I'm not even sure HOW to get/run the servicepacks.... I'll run the version of defrag that came with my NT, and I'll only run it when I have spare time and bored and when I need to... It works better that way "features?" I'm certain that alot of the nixies when you are a great geek could do more than NT... it's just that NT usually supports my hardware whereas when I ran nix on the 486 I had... They're full of improvements, support newer hardware and make NT more stable and sometimes add more features. You should be running at least SP3. 1&2 are less stable. SP5 or 6a IMHO should be used on systems above 200 MHz as they slow things down. Certain software packages won't install without a later service pack. You can download them right from Micro$oft.com. Just do a search from the home page. quote: I'll run the version of defrag that came with my NT, and I'll only run it when I have spare time and bored and when I need to... It works better that way

NT 4 Server is nice, but Win2k Server Pro beats it all to heck. I do wish they would have kept the original name for 2k, though (NT 5). 2k Server has made my job as an tech coordinator for my school much easier.Cory5412, to get the NT SPs, go to windowsupdate.com. It should scan your computer and show you all (well, actually some) of the updates you need. If you are planning on using NT 4 to do anything on the 'net, you should be running SP6a as it fixes a ton of vulnerabilities. You should also be aware that NT 4 now has at least one serious vulnerability that M$ has declared to be unrepairable. (Some days, I wish I knew nothing of M$ operating systems.) OS X forever!
