Does anyone here run A/UX (Apple's Unix OS, before os X)? If you are, where did you get it?

Wow... Back in the day I tried to get my hands on A/UX, and it was hard to find several years ago. From what I've read, it's exceedingly rare now. Good luck, if you're trying to run it.

Does anybody know where I could find some information on A/UX? Did it have a GUI or was it only a CLI?

thanks

It had a mac-like GUI. You can read a bit about it in the UI section at www.applefritter.com

That looks really awesome. Why didn't Apple base there next generation OS on that instead of buying NeXT? I'm not saying that NeXT is bad or OS X is bad I'm just curious.

Yes , but Steve Jobs wouldn't be a part of this because If Apple hadn't bought NeXT Jobs would not have been involved with Apple.

ummm...its taking like 15 years to login to the ftp. Has anybody actually downloaded it from that site?

Hmmm, booted into Mac OS X and tried it in OmniWeb. Works like a charm. However, I read that bit about A/UX at applefritter and I think i'd be in a bit over my head if i attempted to muck around with it on my 650. I'll stick with Mac OS 8.1 for now

Well, I've downlaoded it, and burned the compressed inmages to a CD, so when I'm back at my house, I can load it on a system.

I gotta figure out WHAT system to put it on tho. Won't run on my Quadra 630, so I may have to go get a Quadra 850 or something.. darn!

That's because your Mac will only see the HFS partition. Most of the disk is taken up by the A/UX partition which your Mac can't read. Don't mount the image (if you must, make sure you don't change anything), just burn it onto a CD with Toast.

I have. The link that Gamba has for A/UX doesn't work. I spent a pretty friggin long time d/ling it on a 28k modem and I was P'ed O when I found it didn't work. But then again, I didn't have the version of Toast that lets you burn images...

everymac.com states that the WGS 95 (Q900 in WGS form) is only full featured when running A/UX. What is meant by this? What was special about it?

you can download a/ux from a variety of sources:

ftp:

ftp://ftp.geo.tu-freiberg.de/pub/incoming/

Hotline:

download from my hotline server, retromac68k.dyndns.org, l/p retro/retro (down today for maint).

I would suggest dl from the ftp site as it is faster. You may want to dl some of the text and refs from my site though.

in terms of reviews:
http://applefritter.com/ui/aux/

cheers!

*Ahem*......Back to the topic. I downloaded A/UX yesterday. I am waiting until I get that 230 meg HD that I bought from Cinemafia to install AUX on it. Also, I was reading the sixth edition of The Mac Bible (released at about the same time as sys 7.5.3) and they had some interesting references to OS 8 (code named Copland) as "the revolutionary system" that would have protected memory and would not use extensions, and would only run on PowerPC macs. That sounds suspiciously like a Unix OS, perhaps like A/UX.....does anyone know why they didn't do this?

Oh they did, only it's called OSX. It just took them alot longer than planned because of the whole fiasco that erupted in the late 90's.

Applefritter's A/UX article addresses part of this too.

quote:

But sadly, A/UX clearly was doomed to extinction. It wasn't climactic change or an asteroid that took it down, but something that for it was just as devastating. By the time A/UX got as good as what you've seen here, Apple was preparing to jump ship on the Motorola 68k platform. Porting A/UX to the PPC platform on top of all the trouble they were having with the bread-and-butter Mac OS would undoubtedly have been too large a drain of resources. Further, the "we'll run the parts we haven't done yet under emulation" strategy they used with Mac OS just wouldn't of flown under A/UX; a complete rewrite would of been called for.

Man, I remember back when my brother was trying to explain to the family what this Copland was going to do for us. It sounded pretty crappy to me, as it couldn't use any of the extensions that we had. I didn't see any reason why they should not let us use our cool stuff with this supposedly great new product. That was back when I'd try to prove how much cooler my mac was than some other guy's by telling him how many rows of extensions were loaded at startup. *Shudders* I think we broke 3 rows once. That quadra never worked right...I wonder if there was some connection? Man, now I jump for joy if I find out that my iMac doesn't actually need 3 or 4 of the extensions that are installed...the damn thing takes 4 minutes to start up.

Not really. Copland was abandoned (after being pushed back several times), and replaced with Rhapsody, which in turn begat Mac OS X.

When it became obvious Apple was not up to the task of rewriting the Mac OS from scratch (Copland), they set out to buy an OS. They ended up buying NeXT.

Okay, you're right. But if you look at the big scheme of things, OSX is pretty much what Copland would have been, had it ever come to light. Though, Aqua probably wouldn't have been there.

I think that if Copland was made when they said it would be, the Mac OS would look something like OS 9 with a terminal application. There would have been no Aqua, or dock for that matter.

One of the problems with the whole fiasco was that originally they aimed to release one perfect program, instead they were taking so long chainging the requirements and such that they had to delay and fix, delay and fix.

With OS X and the like, Apple realised people would rather have the program now, ready or not, than be treated to vaporware.

Copland was to be the ultimate OS, written from scratch, by Apple. It was not to be based on anything ever done before.

That turned out to be more than Apple could muster.

Update: After weeks of waiting, I was finally able to get access to an internet connection fast enough to download A/UX. I burnesd it to a CD, and also bought a Hard Drive to install it on my 660 A/V. When I tried to boot off it (holding down the C key), though, nothing happened, and my Quadra couldn't read it. Any suggestions?
