It was nicely addictive on my Performa 631CD, but crashed intermittently on my 7100/66AV. Does this prove that 68K Macs are better? You decide... Go to Top of Page

Well, it proves that the first generation PPC's are pretty crappy at 68k software support.

• Escape Velocity (hour after hour on my PowerBook 540c)
• Bolo
• Lemmings!!!!!!
• MacSolitaire (version 1.0, 1984. Runs fine on my Cube onder OS 9.2.2, never ceases to amaze my PC-using friends, that. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it runs in Classic under X, too. How's that for clean programming!)

Tetris and Escape Velocity are awesome, but Monkey Islands 1 and 2 are the best!

I just copied about 60 68k games off my "MacCube" CD collection onto my Quadra 840. Some of the better ones I've been playing are Cyclone, PowerBall, Doom II and KQ 5. Whee!

If any of them aren't available from the Macintosh Garden, upload them to our server. I'm not sure that Doom II is abandonware yet, but no one will care if we have it.

I have to cross check all these games with the hotline server and the garden. Many of them are pretty unique, as I've never even heard of them before!

Oh and BTW, the MacCube collection was a set of 7 CD's from Aztech software filled with demo, share and freeware apps that came out in or around '94. Funny that years later the G4 Cube would come along...

Doom 1 did not run that bad on my Preforma 550, but Doom 2 did not run well at all. The only Mac level editor I could find that actually worked would not run with Doom 2 either.

Anyone ever hear of Oxyd? In my opinion one of the best 16 color games ever released...

Not only have i heard of Oxyd, but I was just playing it! It's a tough'n, too.

Oh, and I was also playing Doom II on the Quadra 840av, and it runs very smooth. Not quite as well as on the 7500, obviously, but still damn good!

My favorite 68K Games:

Escape Velocity: Should have been #1 overall on the MA Top games list!

Marathon 2:The SPNKR was more of a Dooms day device then weapon

Wolfenstein 3D:Just plain cool

I liked Gabriel Knight. Ran slower on a 7200/75 in a RAM disk with 3x as much RAM as it wanted and no other apps running than on a 575 with 8 meg of RAM...

Escape Velocity was a kick-arse game too. Anyone here make EV plugs? I have been working on an EV conversion for several years now, if I ever finish it I will upload it to the hotline server. If previous experience holds true, I will actually finish the thing about 3 days before Ambrosia releases EV Nova...

Does anyone know if an editor was ever made for Oxyd?

I made about 60% of a pretty big plug. It was about 2 or 3 megs when I quit and had most of one of the big storylines. It (of course) involved the Aliens and introduced some cool new alien ships and planets and stuff. New rebel and fed ships too, and big storylines for both govt's. I got bored. Maybe I should have someone finish it for me, but EV Nova is coming out, so i doubt anyone would be interested. that was like 2 to 3 years ago anyway

I got about two thirds of the way through this EV conversion, I still work on it occasionally, so there is still hope that I might actually finish it. There is a picture of some of the new ships here...

Wow, those are really awesome. It looks like they were rendered in millions or at least thousands of colors, though. Do they display well in the game? Classic EV only supports 256 colors. Nova is in thousands or millions, not sure which.

You are right, the image is not 256 colors. Since almost all of the ships are grey and red, and the system palete has a good range of greys and reds, they actually look pretty good in the game. The only ships that did not take being changed to 256 colors well are the gold colored ship in the lower left and the bright blue ship in the lower right.

I want to say that EV Nova uses thousands of colors but I an not 100 percent sure.

I was looking for my arcade disk (win3.x) and ran across Harrier Strike Mission II, from 1987, is a copy of it on the HL server? I can't read it on any of my current macs, pretty sure it's a 400k floppy from the 512ke/Plus era. If it's already been uploaded, I won't bother with resurrecting it.
