a moment of silence for Netscape

its officially dead.
http://mozillazine.org/

The Mozilla Foundation started today, officially bastardizing Mozilla (http://www.mozilla.org) and as soon as AOL found out, they fired all their Mozilla hackers and even went as far as pulling the Netscape logos off the building... immediately.

I suggest that we observe a moment of silence for our great Browser Martyr, Netscape.

This sucks. And Netscape 4 used to be one of my favourite browsers, too...until it hit version 6 when AOHell started killing it...

Well considering I didn't get on the net until 1998, I never had a reason to use a web browser. To be honest I've never liked Netscape, it's slow, crash prone, takes up about 40MB of space and half that in RAM. I don't think I've ever liked any web browser except maybe IE or iCab. Safari is just the bomb. Maybe a little incompatible at times, but definitely a great browser. I guess I am sad to see Netscape go since it was at least giving M$ some competition.

Netscape is pretty crash prone on classic mac's (its better if you give it alot more ram). My first browers was mosaic 1.0 on the PC, that goes back to the start of the internet (first pc browser isnt it?)

Netscape 4 has always given me good results on '040s. But yeah, if you're running Jag, Safari is definately the way to go. It simply kicks ass.

netscape use to be the best,
but then in IE 3, microsoft started making
it's browser faster. so i guess from that
point on, it sucked.

i'm just glad that it died in AOL
than it died on it's own!

IMHO IE's always been a complete POS, even though it did start to get a little bit better with version 4.0.

And I've used Netscape since v1.0... and Mozilla since last year. Thank goodness mozilla will continue, even if it's without a paid staff.

I used to have a boxed copy of Netscape 1, it was shareware back then, it came with a ISP connect kit I bought.

Netscape was only ever good on Macs with good ram and stable systems. NOT road apples.

On the PC front, Netscape wasn't the best, it seemed they liked the bloat in thier software and could never get it slim enough.

Ie on the other hand, sadly for some sites is a requirement. Although I have a hack that prevents people from using Ie on a site. It just crashes whenever the page loads. Some argue and say Ie is stable, yes, but when it crashes, every single window you are using is lost. In other words, if you are doing important things.....consider it yesterday's news.

Netscape is the browser I prefer. Used to be on the pc's & Macs back in 94/95?

Netscape changed & from what I've seen anything after 5 is just unworkable.

IE is completley dodgy everytime I run it be it on pc or on Mac, it seems to have a very narrow idea of how it should be set up.

I didn't get far with Mozilla, it was slow to start up but then seemed fairly nippy once it got going, but I dread having to configure it.

From what I've seen of "modern" web browsers they are just too much hassle, I'll certainly be putting my 4 year old son through an intensive training course lasting six months(through which period he'll not be allowed to play or watch telly) & then he might understand how to use a web browser, honestly they are all pants from what I've seen you need to learn more with a web browser than you do with Mac classic os or with win95.

Netscape was good at one time but it stopped being good quite a while ago.

Man I hope Safari is good or just that we get a decent web browser.

I vote against too many sh*t companies cacking up our web.

heh... speaking of netscape... does anyone remember anything about how netscape and java were supposed to be the bases of this wild new OS that marc andreesen was going to create along with the people at SUN and (that other place iThink)

Netscape also supposedly had server software... or something... I forgot where I read it but it's an interesting tidbit

well, now on Win32 the only real good browser is Mozilla Firebird, formerly Phoenix. Its 10 times faster than IE, and its just a browser, without all the MozillaBloat.

I used Netscape 2 and 3 on my Performa, my ISP gave me IE2 for Mac and i promptly downloaded NS. They were pretty good, but Netscape now (as much as i hate to say it) is total crap and truly should have been dead a long time ago.

Go to http://www.sauna.org/retro/ to download Win and Mac binaries of early browsers, like NS 0.9 versions and all versions of Mosaic.

I vote No.

AOL should not have bothered buying netscape, it died years ago. Let it be buried in peace, stop trying to raise things from the dead AOL!

Actually, I thought that AOL had killed netscape, the way they turned it into an AOL thing, and promoted Internet Exploder.

AOL got something like $900,000,000 or was it $700,000,000 recently from microsoft in cash for a lawsuite netscape had on the books for years against microsoft. AOL purchased netscape because they wanted a club to beat microsoft as needed, now that the club isnt needed anymore its being closed down.

but i must say i run like up to 7 explorer windows on a pc.
really run fast. try that on a mac, you'll get a super slow
web browsing. so i guess IE not on the mac is quite a good
thing. like, what new tech does M$ upgraded it to these days ?

not quite... Safari uses the KHTML rendering engine rather than Mozilla's Gecko engine.
