WHOA there. I was included in their statement regarding all those who thought the 040 had died. I mean, yes, I knew it was still used in embedded systems including some military technologies (right?) but I I had no idea they'd made this much progress with it. Long live 68k!

On real terms tho, I never know 950s could be upped to 94 or so MHz...

I may try it when I get some courage from the Wizard of Oz...

Hi
There is a rumor about 68060 CPU at 2 GHz on Rocket '060 card.
Another rumor: ColdFire accelerator for old Apple 68K hardware.
Are the articles real news or just April 1st jokes?

According to Motorola, the 68060 only goes up to 75 MHz. Of course, according to them the 68040 only does up to 40 MHz??? Wierd, you'd think Moto would have accourate information regarding their own products...

That's whats funny about 68040 qouted speeds: how come a Quadra 950 is only listed as 33 MHz while a G4 gets to be 1GHz on a 133 MHz bus?

Speed although good isnt everything.

I firmly believe, rightly or wrongly, that if a 68k(68060) machine was built today that it could perform alongside the pc boys with thier 2 gightz cpu's. Amd's 1.7 gightz outperforms intels 2 gig!!!!!
for example.

intel and microsoft are wastefull with resources wheras the 68k tos/magic ideal is to be more efficient therby affording better and less hassle performance.

somebody asked why have a 68060 when you can have a 2 gig 68040.

The 68060 is a superior chip not just the same chip faster. I am not too well versed but the 68060 is a more "modern" chip. suitable for todays market? at least it would be nice to find out.

For our Quadra's we need to, order new roms to work with the 68060, 68060 cpu's and a rewrite of the Apple Mac os to be 68k optimised.

sounds like a fun project and I know a few ppl who would be interested but would be good to get Apple interested.

True. However, the only thing a 75 MHz 68060 is gonna be faster at is stuff that don't run at all on the PC.

Why don't we just build a new computer in a new case, ad write a new version of rhapsody specifically designed for the computer.

It has to have at least one PDS slot, 2 PCI slots and 2 NuBus slots, Having ISA slots would be nice too. It has to support SCSI and IDE, and the ability to use more than one processor and as much ram as possible are a must. then we rewrite the ROM in an LC, so that we can use our new mosnter to "netboot" the LCs

THAT would be fun

Clearing up the double-clock-speed thing: the fast one is the FPU speed, according to an auction I saw

quote:

I took a walk in the rain one day on the wrong side of the tracks
I stood on the rails till I saw that train
Just to see how my heart would react
Now some people say that you shouldn't tempt fate
And for them I would not disagree
But I never learned nothing from playing it safe
I say fate should not tempt me

I take my chances, I don't mind working without a net
I take my chances, I take my chances every chance I get

I sat alone in the dark one night, tuning in by remote
I found a preacher who spoke of the light but there was brimstone in his throat
He'd show me the way according to him in return for my personal check
I flipped my channel back to CNN and I lit another cigarette

I take my chances, forgiveness doesn't come with a debt
I take my chances, I take my chances every chance I get

I've crossed lines of words and wire and both have cut me deep
I've been frozen out and I've been on fire and the tears are mine to weep
Now I can cry until I laugh and laugh until I cry
So cut the deck right in half, I'll play from either side

I take my chances, I pay my dollar and I place my bet
I take my chances, I take my chances every chance I get
I take my chances, I don't cling to remorse or regret
I take my chances, I take my chances every chance I get
I take my chances

I take my chances
