I am using my ppc at the moment.
I can't bear to offload my 840av.
My wife told me that I am greedy because I have three computers
I am using my 840av as a recording studio!
I want a 9 gig hard drive for it, but am having trouble finding one, I will be patient I think, under £30, or under £20?

To the point of my title;

68k's have smaller software programs, which work. Now that may sound a daft comment but I have had quite a bit of software which performs erratically.

The ppc & above world all get is "you need this plug in", "you need that plug in", "you need this/that or the other software"

It's just a complete misery at times.

I have an idea I will name my ppc Shaktimac 7600/132, perhaps that will make it seem more fun.

My wish list of computers,

68060 Atari
fast pc running Gemulator, which can also emulate 68k Apple, so if spped ratio is the same ie: pc speed/4*3 then what would be the fastest 68k possible? 2.4 gig(we havn't got any faster yet have we?"/4*3= 1.8 Ghtz?
68060 Quadra 840av

Now I've gone & drooled all over myself

shaktiman

Quadra 840av, prettymuchmaxedout8xcd drive
os 8.1
128 meg ram, 500 meg hard drive

The real reason I like my 68k macs is because they are obsolete.

I know the last version of every program that will run on these machines and can usually find them in box really cheap. For newer computers PC and MAC there is always the endless upgrade cycle of new app out you have to have, needs more memory, processor power, hd space. Dont have this problem at all.

The 68k's were usuable with little memroy by now you can max them out. My 840av has 128mb ram, and a 18gb scsi drive for video capture, some thing unheard of back in the day these machines were being used. So any software I do have for these system runs very fast.

The hardware addons are dirt cheap. Memory, disk drives, DAT drives, removable media, video capture hardware, scanners that used to cost $1000's are now dirt cheap. There is nothing like running a machine with the very best hardware available for it. I have a $1k or more video card in my Q950 that cost me $10 new in the box with drivers.

The computers themselves are cheap so you can buy quite a variety of 68k's before you find the one you really like and stick with it. replacement parts are also cheap.

I find that it's something that is so flexible. For example, a good 68k playtoy can range from a single color-classic with a small printer and keyboard/mouse.... to anything more like a lab of 30 Q610's with an AWGS95 and all sorts of crazy playjunk like expensive scanners projectors laser printers and a *stock* of spare parts...

I love networking and the 68ks are great because they run fast, theyre simple and they follor most standards.

Using a jackhammer to drive a nail is not fun. Using a computer that is not well suited to a task is not fun. 68k computers are well suited to many tasks and are fun to use. I have over eighty computers and keep about 10 in daily use. The low cost of acquiring them now also lets you use them in applications that you would not choose if the cost was higher. I am planning on moving a mac to the garage for the purpose of keeping track of my projects out there. Not something you would choose to do with a $3000 computer.

That's true also... older computers are great for outdoors and garages and other places like that.

Back when my only mac was the 7300 and I used old PCs also... I kept a 486 out in the garage and it served me very well, being old, it was durable... and it just always worked. Macs are like that also.

Indeed, for me the attraction to the 68k is mainly because there's an end to the story and so the maximum spec-machines are there just for the grabs (or simply put together by adding some cheap parts together). And a max-spec 68k will always stay a max-spec 68k :-) Now try that with x86-hardware ;-) But I'm also attracted to the fact that they're efficient and just plain fun, and I dreamt of having a Mac in the days when the SE cost thousands of guilders... System 6 on my Classic II amazes me every time I use it... :-)

I hadn't thought of it like that...

And there's still the thing where... ther'e still room for innovation...

Software and even new hardware can, and quite possibly still is, being developed for 68k macintosh.
For example, open source M68k unixes and related software...

68ks are fun because it's cheap to use, fix and upgrade them. Also, i know where all the problems are, and know how to stop them from rearing their ugly heads. On top of that, I still need compatibility with some of my ADB/Serial/SCSI devices.

It's less stressfull than using your new computer because if something goes wrong, then oh well. It's not like it scares you if the hard drive starts making funny noises. You just replace it with another one you got out of the garbage.

I was bored when I was 8, and I felt like fiddling with the hex values of a program, and then running it, and seeing how it reacts.... I altered one value, and I got it to run at 640X480. it was odd, it crashed a lot and all the mac icons were corrupted, but still! pritty good! hehehehehehehhehe! back to life now...

68ks are fun because it's like having a 'collection' you can 'collect' different parts and always remember...

The MacOS vmac 0.1.9b lets you run at up to 600 x 800

I'd like to have a real mac plus with a screen like that.

I always thought that the SE screen would do good at about 600 by 600 pixels... that's about the space that the pixels would fill I think....

Yeah. Pity it won't work. And even if you could trick it to work, it'd be pretty hard to see on the 9" CRT. Ah well.

I know, but my point is that there's no way to get the hardware to support 800x600 unless you put in an analog board from another display that supports it.

Yeah... but then again 800 by 600 isn't what I wanted... I wanted 600 by 600

because the opening is like... a square.....

yeah I know the whole analog and the video chips would have to be changed but just think how cool!!!

My IIsi matches up perfect with the AudioVision monitor... but that's also the IIsi's normal monitor...

I use external hard drives and CDroms as monitor stands if I am so inclined....

hey cats you could set up your 700 as a stand/external hard drive (network) for your iMac or your 8600
