the easiest way, llamaboy, would be to string one serial cable plugged (as before) into the same port on each machine, tell the machine to use appletalk on that port and pretty much... just go...

I would like a PDP-11... but I'd really like an SGI Altix SuperCluster (more recent, AND WAY faster, cooler, scalable, potentially bigger!!!)

okay! thank you soooo much ~cory5412~! i have had many macs in my day and have collected some very odd parts. back in the day i used to be quite a wizzard at this stuff but have forgoten all of it. i just happend to have the phonenet thingies. now how do i choose the file sharing use the printer or the modem port? the closest thing i can find is the network controll panel. but all i see is a "local talk" icon that looks like a printer. have i missed an extension on the install?

on another idea. i found an artical about apple having a local talk bridge that would alow a mac to act as a adapter if it has ethernet and local talk ports. i found it got it and now i am wondering "if" i get the whole thing working will that do the job of even sharing between the four? anyone know about it? "LocalTalk Bridge" is the thing.

here is the article http://www.lowendmac.com/network/bridge.shtml

you have to scroll down to the software part of it.

Install Open Transport and then go to the AppleTalk control panel. That will let you choose between the Printer and modem ports.

Luck!! If you've gotten it to work over ethernet it should just be the same except without the wires.

Good luck. When I connected my PB 190cs via WiFi, i could not get any AppleTalk services to operate -- no printing or file sharing. Only the TCP/IP services, like web browsing , email, and ftp worked. This may have been due to my use of non-Apple WiFi equipment (a Buffalo Airstation 802.11b card and a M$ MN-500 WiFi base station).

If you do get printing and file sharing working, I would appreciate hearing how your did it.

That would be good to know... but can't you get AFP over TCP/IP? I know if you're running like... OS 8.5 or 9 you can that's how OS9 works with windows 2000 and 2003 servers

Well I'm not exactly sure but whenever you enable AFP on Win2k/2k3 it just 'worked' like that with the iMac and my .NET 2k3 server...
